Quick poll: if I tell you something's encoded in Rec.709, with what transfer function (nonlinear to display linear) do you display it on a regular "consumer" display system — specifically excluding professional video editing systems where people might rightfully know better about how to use these and when to deviate from the usual behavior.
(I saw all options being used in different computer systems made by different companies, and even others sometimes, making this encoding declaration one of the most ambiguous there is, unfortunately...)

Side comment about the use of color in Cat's Eye: the setting sun is always this blackest ball of fire in black-and-white drawings, surrounded by a white halo. It's interesting that Tsukasa Hojo chose to depict a deep bright red using "deep red" instead of "bright" as most people usually do in these situations.
One big motivation for this is that people often shove (pseudo-)statistical results under my nose. In some cases it "looks" like they did due diligence but more often than not the significance results look fuzzily fishy — and I can't argue why with confidence because I don't have enough statistical literacy.
A secondary motivation is that many fundamental results, papers, standards and recommendations on #ColourScience are based on statistics around psych and physical tests, whether for good or bad. But these results still elude me for the most part. 🧵
A colleague shared this with me:

These are pretty interesting results, especially with all the high-resolution examples in the thread!
While the utility of the work presented here obviously lies in color matching, from a thoretical standpoint it ultimately represents a mean field model for cognition, where the most important postulate is, that Plook the stimuli distribution associated with the macro look or style, represents...
I will be holding my seminar series "The Phenomenon of Colour" again in 2025.
I am thinking of designing an info-poster for it. If any former students/participants have artwork that I can use for the posters, please feel free to send it my way !

I will be adding a new seminar: "Colour in Informatics" to the programme.

For the curious, I made this to compare colors in CIELAB colorspace (the inner ring) with their equivalents in CIELUV. Black lines connect equivalent points.
