The Como fairytale: reaching the Champions League 119 years after the club's founding.

AGI - On May 25, 1907, a group of supporters gathered in a downtown bar to found the Como Foot-Ball Club. Ninety-nine years later, the border city, more Swiss than Italian in character, reserved for a quiet life and love of it, appears transformed by joy.

“In Italia e nel mondo semm cumasch” is one of the club’s historical identity anthems from the Como curve, which reached its peak exoticism with a third-place finish in the 1981 Mitropa Cup, a mythical tournament for the winners of Serie B championships.

No one could have dreamed, seven years ago, while navigating the swamps of amateur teams, of qualifying for the Champions League, unleashing dazzling play and a brazenness without fear of anyone.

Hartono and the Como Project

Money, certainly. The immense financial resources of the Indonesian Hartono family were at the base of the successes, but the story isn't as simple as it appears.

While Cesc Fabregas was a star player, he hadn’t even obtained his coaching license when he took Como to Serie B. And while he spent over one hundred million in the market, the only player he bought with a name, Alvaro Morata, was the worst performer.

The rest were young, talented players, just over twenty, mostly Spanish-speaking, and the Como’s style of play, blending flair and organization, despite taking a few "loans" due to arrogance, was a beam of light in an increasingly opaque and crowded Serie A with players approaching the end of their careers, like Luka Modric.

Fabregas and the Offensive Play Philosophy

“There aren't any Italians,” critics say, but Fabregas explained that he tried to find them, Italian players suited to his style, but they cost more than foreign players and were less talented.

In compensation, for the first time in history, Primavera (the youth team) was promoted to the top tier, and the intention is to develop talent within the country to launch them into the first team – a Barcelona-style academy with a distinctive approach to attacking football.

Nico Paz, Butez, and the New Azure Symbols

And so, following the dribbling of Nico Paz, the imaginative adventures of goalkeeper-player Butez outside the penalty area, and the fantasies of Martin Baturina, everyone began to discover a gem that has always existed in Como.

The Fascination of Sinigaglia on the Lake

The Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium, a tribute to a player who died in the war, where the city has produced many Olympic gold medals, offers a superb view of the lake. A rationalist-style monument that absorbs the changing moods of the seasons in the lake: intimate in winter, brilliant in summer, and where you can always encounter Hollywood stars in the stands.

Shops selling team merchandise pop up at every corner and have become the favorite souvenir of a city experiencing overtourism for several years.

A Company Close to the City

The club is very present in Comascan life, from recovering football fields on the outskirts to solidarity initiatives, and when Como wins, it offers drinks to the fans in the city’s bars, as well as to opponents – it happened with Napoli.

President Suwarso, a trusted member of the family, is known to everyone and goes to the stadium – he’s not a typical “fund” without an identity. He's also well-liked by opponents for establishing a maximum ticket price of 25 euros in the guest sector.

Some discontent exists regarding the project for the new Sinigaglia, considered by many to be too intrusive on the landscape.

The New Pride of Como’s Fans

Finally, there’s the romantic side of this story: the children who have always supported Inter, Milan, and Juve, considering Como the second team, now grow up fully in blue and chant proudly at the “Pulenta e Galena” stadium, named after the Comascan Davide Van De Sfroos. Polenta and cold chicken – who knows what they’ll taste in Europe.

Como makes history: defeats Verona and qualifies for a European cup for the first time.

The seal, in the end, put Tasos Douvikas in place. He scored the goal that gives Como qualification to Europe for the first time in its history. The victory of Cesc Fabregas’s team in Verona 1-0, thanks to the twelfth goal of the Greek in this season, grants a historic qualification to the European cups, which is still unknown. Anything is possible. It is the culmination of a new story, started in Serie D, under the guidance of the Hartono brothers, one of whom recently passed away, and that now surpasses the Alps arriving in the nights of continental football. A model, many have defined it, although financially the setup orchestrated by the club – as reported by Fatto Quotidiano – has clay feet.

And there’s still the dream of the Champions League.

Certainly, from a sporting perspective, the Lake District club has built a team capable of surprising. And it’s not over. Because with two more games to play and with Milan, busy Sunday evening against Atalanta, just 2 points behind remains the “big hit”: qualification for the Champions League, which will also pass through the results of Roma, in action against Parma. The fate is not in the hands of Fabregas and his, therefore, but in the meantime the calendar smiles.

Race for fourth place: the calendar

The last two engagements will be against Parma, at home, and Cremonese away. Milan will play against Cagliari and Genoa; Roma has the derby against Lazio and then will close in Verona. Juventus, which is now +3 ahead of the Lake District team, is expected by Fiorentina and the derby with Torino. In short, the fight for two places in Champions is still wide open. Meanwhile, it’s time to celebrate because Como is certain to have a place in the Conference League or Europa League. They did it thanks to the second attack and the second best defense of the entire Serie A, moreover, it seems to have shown the best football of the entire championship.
