Watched an old Cassavetes film last night, Mikey and Nicky, starring Peter Falk and directed by Elaine Mays. Very controversial at the time with Mays vying for final cut, etc. It's an interesting film, smothering and crushing in many ways, the desperation of everyone in it, even Ned Beatty's character. A tough watch but worth it in my opinion. The impact it had on May's career is worth an analysis as well. #film #cassavetes #columbo

I had #France in my #CriterionChannel queue since it hit the service in 2021, and I finally watched it yesterday.

#LéaSeydoux is great in service of a #movie that's a dash of #Cassavetes, a pinch of #VanSant, a dollop of #FrenchNewWave, and likely many more references/homages I missed.

It's a disjointed #film that feels like a musical composition with a central structure that veers off into disparate solos before returning to its core, and has an ending that seems to punish the main character.

And so little of #Cassavetes we see.
