Wildfire Smoke Sunset

On most evenings, the sunset shadows on my window blinds look like this:

This evening, though, they looked like this:

There is a wildfire growing near Cameron Lake, about 60 km (37 miles) to the north of where I live. Properties near the fire are on evacuation alert, but I haven’t read or heard much about the progress of the fire in recent hours.

As I settled in for the evening I noticed that the sunset was a lot more orange than usual, and I am assuming it is because of the smoke from the wildfire. There are lots of them in British Columbia at the moment, and this morning there were 134, up from 61 yesterday. Most of them have been caused by lightning strikes but some are caused by human activity. It has been very hot and dry recently, so the least spark can cause a wildfire.

While I continue to be concerned about the fires and the people who live near them, I am also fascinated by the unusual colours in the sky.

Back to my favourite spot on #bchwy4 for the first time since the highway and all the parks alonside reopened. This is the side of the fire that got closest to Cathedral Grove but was thankfully held from advancing over the next ridge. #BeaufortPark #CameronLake #BCWildfire #wildfires #Mosstodon #ThickTrunkThursday #lichen #DouglasFir

My new commuting reality. Trying to get to the lineup before 4:30PM for when it opens to single lane alternating traffic at 5. Second time in a row I got there just a little too late, 4:45, and didn't get through on the first flush. Waiting by now for the other direction to come through. My 1hr to 1.5hr commute will likely take 3.5hrs today.

They are supposed to have the work done making the slope safe after the fire before Labour Day weekend. I think they are optimistic but hoping for the best. If they don't get it done before the rains come in October it will be bad.

Taking advantage of a quick free charge before heading back over the Hump during the 11:30AM "flush". We'll see how long the line is when I get there! Going to aim to get to the line 11:00AM. #bchw4 #cameronlake #EV Also notice the #thicktrunk is it #thicktrunktuesday or #thicktrunkthursday . I feel like the latter is more alliterative. 😆 Beautiful sunny and clear sky day!

Look at this beautiful young lady! My daughter Jade. She has Spanish skin like her Grandad. Shared with permission of course. It was too adorable a photo not to share. Can’t believe she is finishing her first year of University! :) #family #cameronLake #PortAlberni
