oh boy, for a minute there I thought I was about to have my first issue with #cachyos. Went to plug my laptop into an external montor and... nothing. No charging. No display. Nothing.

`paru -S displaylink` and it all works. A little silly today that this would need to be an add-in maybe, but pretty painless.

So #cachyos comes with a DE setup for #niri, which they have defaulted to use in #noctalia shell.

I'd never heard of Noctalia before, but man is it slick. Seems like I can fairly easily run other WMs in it. Maybe I'll give #mangowm a try next.

Yes you can install xfce with it. But I'm steering you to try wayland and KDE plasma. I'm a person who used XFCE since 2014.... And I miss it after removal from Ubuntu and Rocky. KDE is ready however and very shiny. Very stable (not like the buggy KDE of past days)
Cachy lets you try out like 20 other different desktop types too. You will nerd out on the installer

Having a "reflective" afternoon.

On the topic of free operating systems, I have been playing with these lately, and recommend if it suits usage (alpha order).

- Alpine Linux (my daily driver)
- Chimera Linux
- Elementary Linux
- FreeBSD
- OpenBSD
- Solus Linux

Not "mainstream" suggestions per se, and that's kinda the point. Caveats re: glibc/musl, nvidia support, etc. apply.

If I had to have nvidia support for my primary workstation I'd probably go with Solus (KDE), or at least try it, in spite of systemd.

I'm starting to scratch the surface on

- CachyOS

for my son's gaming rig. Pretty much what it says on the tin. I like it. Arch could use a bit of polish. We'll see how it goes on real hardware.

Others that I haven't run much beyond playing with the iso, but am intrigued by, mostly by intended use case tbh:

- Mint
- Zorin

I used to run these for years and years and years but don't nowadays:

- Arch
- Gentoo

Excellent, but the time intensity ...

~20 years ago I used to run Gentoo in a government research agency data centre. Even came up with an "ansible-like" set of deployment scripts/framework and whatnot in /bin/bash+openssh to manage them (pre-dates Ansible).

Fun times... the time... the time.

Gentoo was bracketed by RHEL in the past and CentOS as the successor. CentOS was fine but gave up a lot of performance way back then. Shifting priorities, server hardware was still following Moore's, and all that.

I flirted with Ubuntu a bit over the years. Could never really get into it back when it was decent. I won't touch it now.

Today, I think I'm done with Debian. Too static for my tastes - stuff gets too stale. Sure, there's Testing/Sid but there's also other options at that point.

Now that I'm a sysadmin just for myself I can embrace using whatever I want. Ha.

I'm all about community projects nowadays.

Corporate software will eventually disappoint you so it pays to just not go there in the first place.

Deep thoughts.

🍷 Sooo, Feierabend! Schluß mit Lustig! Nun wirds Ernst. ;)

Well, I think my #guix journey is over, at least for now. Too many issues in too rapid a succession, with too much time spent just trying to get to a semi-usable system.

Seemed like a good time to go back to and old favorite after many many years away, but when I went to download #arch my eye was caught by the shiney newness of #cachyos. Legitimately a half hour later and I was up and running.

Trying out #niri now. It sure is pretty. But I'm not sure it'll win out over #sway for me long term.

Maybe I'll drop guix on as just a dotfile manager at some point, but I think for now I'm going back to #gnustow and putting my attention on building usable things rather than just my OS.

Finally installed #linux on the laptop, and it's ready for gaming!

Smooth experience so far with #cachyos
