Does economic growth harm the planet? | BBC Sunday Morning Live debate with Tim Jackson, Daze Aghaji and Andy Mayer

CUSP Director Tim Jackson joined BBC One’s Sunday Morning Live for a live debate on whether economic growth harms the planet, following renewed internationa ...

A continuing voice of reason in our time. We must move toward the good of the many outweighing the good of the few if we're going to survive as a species.

This, from Antonio Guterres via The Guardian:

...critics argue that endless, indiscriminate growth on a planet with finite resources is driving not only the climate and nature crisis but increasing inequality.

Guterres said: “Moving beyond gross domestic product is about measuring the things that really matter to people and their communities. GDP tells us the cost of everything, and the value of nothing. Our world is not a gigantic corporation. Financial decisions should be based on more than a snapshot of profit and loss.”

Africa: Looking Beyond GDP to Reach the Sustainable Development Goals: [UN News] Countries should consider looking beyond Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, as the key measure of economic growth to achieve the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN policymakers have suggested. http://newsfeed.facilit8.network/TJrmY4 #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #EconomicGrowth #UNPolicy #BeyondGDP

📉 **GDP ≠ Wellbeing** 📈

A nation’s health is more than just its **wealth**. Measuring success by GDP alone ignores the struggles of real people.

✅ **How many have a home?**
✅ **How many need food banks?**
✅ **How many can afford healthcare & education?**

If an economy is “booming” but homelessness and food insecurity are rising, is it truly success? **Wellbeing must be the real measure of progress.**

It’s time to prioritize **people over profits.** #WellbeingEconomy #BeyondGDP #PeopleFirst

The UN adopted a new framework to integrate natural capital into economic reporting, going beyond GDP. The framework accounts for nature's contribution and impact on the economy and human well-being. The new measure can reshape decision and policy-making towards sustainable development for both people and the environment. #NaturalCapital #BeyondGDP #SEEA https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/09/natural-capital-integrate-economic-policy/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=HariTulsidas%2Fmagazine%2FArchetypes

Natural capital, which is the umbrella term for renewable and non-renewable resources, is important. Here's why it must be integrated into economic policy.

We need the arts, more plays and works of fiction to help us envision the future, and bring to mind differing views and opposing sides of an argument.—Tim Jackson in interview with Radio New Zealand.

Why science needs art according to Professor Tim Jackson

We need less growth to put less demand on the planet's resources and slow down climate change, but we do need more art, more plays and works of fiction to bring to both sides of that argument to life says Professor Tim Jackson.
