The #Supergirl2026 movie needs a CONTENT WARNING for #parents with young kids-- and even just for fans who enjoy the character and have certain expectations for her.
#Supergirl murders someone on screen and in cold blood, and other people are similarly murdered on screen.
I hate to post #spoilers , but I've read comments by too many parents who walked into the theatre and expected a safe movie for little kids. This is NOT a family-friendly film.
It will also be incredibly disappointing to fans (like me) who are hoping for feminist inspiration and a chance to see their favorite superheroine empowering women on the big screen.
This is NOT empowering to women, nor is the character written by anyone familiar with her. It fails the #BechdelTest miserably, and the two main characters are written as men. If you swapped out the two lead actresses with male actors, you would barely have to change a word of dialogue to make it work. There are no secondary females with more than a few lines of dialogue. Most females are victimized and props.
Supposedly, it's based on the #WomanOfTomorrow graphic novels, but ignores all the best parts of those books (including the imaginative colorful other planets) and tries to out-do #Snyder for brutal and adults-only content. It's like the film was instead based on a hallucination-filled, ten-word ChatGPT summary of the comics.
I've been a #Superman and #DCcomics fan since 1980. I know the character very well, in her many versions: live, animated, and in comics. My adult daughter and I both wanted very much to enjoy the film, and for it to succeed.
But we were deeply disappointed. Gunn and DC have once again forgotten that families and females want to enjoy #superheroes , too...
