The 1889 sculpture of Atlas by James Young on the top of the Standard Buildings on Hope Street in Glasgow. Some people love this statue, but many others fail to spot it perched on the roofline high above the city streets.

From this I think we can learn two lessons:

1. While these types of details may be easily missed, they really add to the beauty of a building and bring joy to those who notice then.

2. When in Glasgow, always look up - you never know what interesting little details you'll miss if you don't!

Oh, and before you ask, I've got absolutely no idea what half a skateboard is doing up there!

The rather elegant logo of the Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Company on a manhole cover in Broomhill in Glasgow. This means it was installed between 1911 and 1932, making it around 100 years old. I guess sometimes it pays to look down as well as up in Glasgow!

Two cherubs with a printing press reading a book, flanked by a pair of owls. Just an everyday sight in Glasgow if you remember to look up!

I've been going to Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow since I was a kid, but I only noticed these wonderfully ornate cast iron vent covers for the first time the other day.

It just goes to show that Glasgow always has something new to offer, no matter how well you think you know it!

Designed by Robert Thomson in the free classical style, it was completed in 1907. It features some amazing sculptures, including a row of snarling lion's heads between the first and second floors, and some cherubs operating a printing press (as it was originally designed as a newspaper office).

It also features some very cute art nouveau style owls, but more on them later.
