If you're an author & have run a successful Kickstarter campaign, can you share your best lesson/top recommendation for someone who has never done a crowdfunding project before?

I'm thinking of crowdfunding for the production of an audiobook of my latest novel LITANY FOR A BROKEN WORLD.

I have some computer questions.

If I fork out £200, the government wants to give me a further £900 for a laptop or a machine with 4GB of RAM. I think that I should take the money. But what should I buy? I would like it to be repairable because I spill things a lot and a modern laptop is not going to go obselete, I think

I need Windows because there is not yet workable voice to text software for Linux. As the government are going to pay for the licence, can I run windows in a virtual machine inside, say, Debian? Would that stop windows spying on everything else I do?

I would like a three button mouse because then I can use the middle button as a drag lock.

I am happy to buy refurbished machines but I feel like at that price I will be able to buy some that goes whiz-bang and that sounds fun.

i need it to be AI and bloat free, but I do need to use Instagram and Google Calender for work. don't need it to be fast or have the best camera.

my budget is 300€ max. and I'm down for a refurbished phone.

Software devs of the fedi, what would you do if your employer suddenly put every dev in the org on high priority projects with deadlines that are only possible to meet by working over time? The story we've been told is that these projects are 'a chance to prove yourself' but hot off the heels of a massive layoff of non-developer staff, it feels more like 'a chance to prove you are a good little lap dog' to me. Dear Fedi friends,

I'm in a bit of a pickle and I could use your brilliant advice.

Long story short, I need to wait an extra 24 hours before attempting to set up Jellyfin on my Raspi (waiting for gear to arrive).

I thought: maybe I could try a low tech / oldie solution first. I have my entire music library super well organized in iTunes (RIP). It's on an old Macbook Pro (2011) connected to an external drive. I can play all the tracks from that computer. I just resurrected my iPhone 6 (capacity: 64GB) to repurpose it as an iPod. My entire music library is 'only" 40GB so the iPhone could hold it all.

Only problem: iTunes on my Macbook Pro does not recognize the iPhone 6. I keep getting error messages when trying to connect to it. I suspect the firmware is too old (on the Mac / too new on the iPhone)... I could not even wipe the iPhone with that old Mac because it couldn't connect to the Apple servers.

The iPhone 6 is completely empty and has iTunes! (Not Apple Music but actual iTunes). It even filled with some tracks I had bought (not sure how).

What would you do in this situation? Are there any workarounds?

My old Macbook Pro is running iOS version 10.8.5 and iTunes is on version 12.0.1.26.

My iPhone 6 (wiped clean and re-associated to my Apple ID) is running software version 12.5.7.

Apple discontinued iTunes support years ago in favor of Apple Music and streaming subscriptions (no wonder, because 💰💰💰💰💰).

I wish I could put my entire music library on my iPhone 6, le sigh. I technically wouldn't even need Jellyfin.

I also have an iPod Touch (1gen) that may connect to my Macbook Pro but its capacity is only 16GB.

What would you do?

Yall how do I prepare for Grad School? My professors gave me these options: 1. Actually and apply as if nothing is happening (Regarding the fact that im an international student, and the fact that its risky to openly state your political stances online) 2. Score high on GRE, apply to universities and then visit them. 3. Apply for any in the top 20 CS universities. I wish I could talk to someone about the steps required to make this happen. My parents cant help, my advisor won't give me any concrete steps, I'm scared to be very honest. I want to make this happen but I don't know how to proceed  I will be a senior in a semester, which means I only have a semester to figure stuff out. Anything and everything helps! Actually y'know what i'm just gonna shoot this shot.

Hello tech and sysadmin people of fedi: if you're running an active IRC server. Can you give some pointers on setting up an (out-of-network, so not really connected to any other servers) IRC server for a very small group? Also some pointers for stuff like Anope/similar management tools.

I'm not exactly server-savvy, since my experience is writing 100% offline software, but i'd like to get off discord with my friends.
