3/ I don’t know where I’m going with this. What I’ve learned as a #disabledperson who works with other folks with #mobility #disabilities is that #inclusion is about far more than just #accessibility of equipment. It’s also about equity of access to resources, services & infrastructure required to use it. How #inclusive are we really being if it’s out of reach to all but a tiny % of the #marginalized group? #equity #disability #aMTB #AdaptiveRecreation
/2.5 *DYK since the late 2010s when greyhound pulled out of Canada, there’s no more #WheelchairAccessible #transportation between Vancouver and Whistler BC? My work does an #AdaptiveRecreation camp in Whistler every year with one of the only organizations offering #aMTB guided rides in the province, and the one barrier we struggle the most with is finding transportation for participants who need it. Don’t even get me started on the cost of #AccessibleVehicles these days.
2/ we want the innovation in #aMTB to be rewarded. Unlike mainstream #mtb there are no rentals for us, and very few guided rides, generally in hard to reach places*. With a majority low income pop’n, huge barriers to personal transportation to where guided rides are available, it just feels... wrong. Exclusive. Non disabled folks can also run, hike, walk trails... for many #disabled folks these bikes are #mobilityaids, the only way to independently #accessrecreation & #nature beyond the asphalt.
My dudes, adapted mountain biking #aMTB is the thing I never thought was possible & made enjoying #OutdoorRecreation possible for me. The way the tech is advancing is mind boggling, but it kills me how high the barriers to entry are. Entry level bikes like mine start at CAD$7k & most sophisticated (the current standard for downhill competition) is the Bowhead RX, CAD$19,000. @jocelyn Welcome! I recommend lots of hashtags to start. You can click them to see if they’re busy, and you can even follow the hashtag to automatically see content on topics important to you!

Also remember you can edit posts, so you can go back and add hashtags to that original post if you like.

Different mastodon servers sometimes have different focuses, so follow those rabbit holes and see who you find!

I got to ride yesterday with Quinn Brett. She is the first person to complete the Tour Divide on an adaptive hand cycle. She is a badass.

I asked which webcast they enjoyed the most last night and all I got were blank stares. Guess what I'm introducing them to next?
