๐Ÿ’ฟ Road Tapes CD - Venue #3

Arrival for today. This is CD 3 from a trilogy of live curiosities Zappa left.

For some reason, these CDs are not easy to get (especially around here in his Majesty's land) ๐Ÿ˜’

Anyways... one is in... two to go!

Here's my story...
The first time I heard this album, I was around 12/13 years old.
I was at a friend's house, and his dad was listening to this record in the living room. One track struck my ear, "Echidna's Arf (Of You)"

I got into the living room and asked what's playing? Zappa, he told me and showed me the record cover!

I grew up listening to prog rock from my older brother's side. He was involved with local bands and had a great vinyl collection.
On my mother's side, I listened to Brazilian music, Jazz, orchestral music, and all kinds of easy listening in between.
(Story of my music influences)

But.... I have never in my life heard something like Zappa, especially that track... It sounds like an impossible piece of music to play by humans, and on top of that... live?!

I told my brother about Zappa, but he didn't look interested. Since then, I've wanted to listen to more Zappa, so I started asking my brother's friends about Zappa, and some of them actually had Zappa records at home.
That was it! Forty-five years later, where I am writing the story!

Later in 2015, I found out there was a DVD of this concert that had come out and got it.
"Echidna's Arf (Of You)" is an almost impossible piece of music to play. Only music genious could play search music without a mistake!

I have watched the DVD many times, but I almost get out of breath watching the band on stage playing the track. They play a fast, precise and complicated piece of music without a mistake... It's impressive!

Since then, my Zappalogicology dont stop growing, and sometimes I think I have a musicanthropy problem! ;)

So... what was the first Zappa record you listened to?

Here is an album I recommend to everyone who has never heard Zappa's music. Groovy Rock and one of, if not the best, band formations Zappa had.

This album and the next one, "apostrophe", should have come out as double vinyl, as both are the most-liked Frank Zappa records for many music lovers, even if they dont like the majority of Zappa's work.

๐Ÿ’ฟ Album: Grand Wazoo Comic Book Extravaganza
๐Ÿ“… Date: 1984
๐ŸŒ Country: Europe
๐Ÿท Label: Mushroom Records Ltd
๐ŸŽ› Bootleg
Features: Double album, Red & White

Another Wazoo bootleg. Zappa always had audience participation in his shows, but this one is special and unique. First, Zappa gave some of the orchestra musicians comic books. Then he tells the audience to make some comic magazine noises as (Capuuu, Tchapooo, etc) conducted by hand signs during the time when the musicians are reading some random parts of the magazine. Very entertaining and unique audience participation, and a rare one to have! Musicly is a very good one with the petite wazoo band, but the audience participation takes up almost one of the records.

Other audience participation can range from dancing the be-bop tango to all the craziness in between.

Recording at The Grand Wazoo tour, this is a must-have record for any collector. This is only one of the many variations Zappa did during the wazoo tour.

This live recording is another hilarious album with the theatrical feel as Zappa accustomed his audience.
All tracks in this album are good, and Zappa still has Flo & Eddie to create those comical voices he loves so much.

Spotlight for this record is "Billy The Mountain", which covers one side of the record.
A story of a Mountain and his small wooden wife Ethel, who lives on his shoulder and is an activist!
A full story and one of the first stories Zappa incorporated into his catalogue.
Later, the musical stories will go from "Billy The Mountain" to "Thing Fish", "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" and "Joe's Garage", but that is for another chapter later in time!

During the "Just Another Band From L.A." tour, Zappa was pushed by a fan!? out of stage at London's Rainbow Theatre. This brought him some head trauma, broken bones and a wheelchair for nearly a year.

Here, the story takes a turn!

๐ŸŽง Band: Zappa & Mothers Of Invention

Ladies & gentlemen, here it is.....
200 MOTELSssssss...
I got the album and the movie... and a bootleg (more later)
This is an album and a movie at the same time. Zappa decided to gather the London Philharmonic Orchestra and bring some guests in for the movie.
Ringo Starr (Beatles) as Frank Zappa, Keith Moon (The Who) as a nun and all the Mothers of Invention band, including Groupies and the fundamental pieces for the scenario, Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie)

This movie/record is... hard to explain!
A satirical movie documentary hilariously performed to showcase a rock band on tour. This includes members' drug use, groupies, redneck cowboys from small towns, terrible town hall villages and hoovers, plus other housekeeping utilities!

Basically, it is an absurd documentary with a mixture of rock tracks and orchestral variations. It's hard not to laugh, and it's not easy to understand!
Highlight tracks to me are: Strictly Genteel, Lonesome Cowboy Burt, *** Dimension, Mystery Roach, This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy and many others!
It all wrapped up in theatrical comedy, animation, serious music and chaos.
Does humour belong in music? Yes! Even if it is absurd, bizarre, comical, hilarious and an orchestral experimentation.

If you have never watched this movie before, do it! If you dont understand, watch it again. If you think it's crazy, think Dadaism and watch it again, if nothing works... listen to the record!
This is the mad genius at work!

On my shelf but this record is not a favourite album of the Mothers of Invention to me!
Only a couple of tracks suit my tastes as "Dwarf Nebula Processional March & Dwarf Nebula", "Oh No", and "The Orange County Lumber Truck"

Most tracks are a real test of loud noise. That is proved at the last track "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" when Zappa decides to show what music is made of... Noise !

Right... I give up on writing a review for each individual record!
It will take me years to post just my Zappa collection, so I'd better keep things simple and post the essentials.
Like this will be easy to post more records regularly. ;)

Questions and comments are always welcome!

Zappa presents himself as a composer! Even so, I am not dying for this particular Zappa record, I recognise the work involved and the composition behind. I do find this to be the first of a continuous composition work, and I very much relate this record with the "civilisation phase III" that came out as a double CD much later in time... (Is this phase 2 of: We're Only In It For The Money)?

#Orchestral #compositions conducted by Zappa; early use of musique concrรจte and tape editing; spoken word โ€œpiano peopleโ€ segments recorded inside a grand piano; two-part suite structure; blend of classical, experimental sound collage, jazz elements, and studio manipulation; part of Zappaโ€™s wider โ€œconceptual continuityโ€ across albums.

Special note for the intro track reused from the composition soundtrack of the movie"Run Home Slow" and the last track of the album, an instrumental of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" from the album "We're Only in it for the money"

The result is not a collection of songs but a continuous piece split into two sides, moving between written passages and abstract interruptions. This is definitely an experimental audio art composition, far out from the time it was published in 1968 and from the rock scene at the time.

This album is also an important starting point in Zappaโ€™s solo catalogue. It lays the groundwork for ideas he would revisit later, and is almost a tribute to his idol, "Edgard Varese".

Definitely Zappa's first orchestral collage of pre-recorded sounds and orchestral research absurdities is a kick on the door for the next orchestral adventures.
