💙 Flashback Friday #9 💙 – Xanga

Before IG and TikTok, there was Xanga; the grungy, glittery home of teen angst in the early 2000s. This blogging platform catered to expressive youth who wanted to share their thoughts, post surveys, and obsessively tweak their layouts with custom HTML and glitter graphics.

A quick update that after trying a few things and them not working out so well, I decided to just manually copy over each Xanga post into Day One. (Over 300 done with many to go!) It's been quite amusing so far! Oh, the things a 20-25 year old college guy posted about in the early 2000’s… 😜

Came across the backup I made of my old Xanga site. Wowwww there’s so much to dig through! Currently checking to see if there’s a way to import the posts into Day One. If not, I may end up needing to do it by hand. It’d be great to have all of these memories in a modern app!

Monthly active users, revenue, traffic, blah blah blah

Here's what you're looking for: anecdotal, vibes-based rankings of random social media sites:

#Mastodon/Fediverse: Nerdy AF
#Bluesky: Angry
#Twitter / X: Angry AF
#Threads: Corporate AF
#TikTok: Chaotic
#Facebook: Who cares
#Instagram: We're still cool! We swear!
#MySpace: Existing
#SpaceHey: Happily existing
#Xanga: Not existing
#Cybiko: NEVER GONNA DIE SUCKAS

I'm also thinking that my early experiments in blogging were more satisfying than microblogging, being interstitial to influencers, and photoblogging. It's a shame it was ruined by relationship drama. #xanga
All these articles about old esoteric social networks and I haven't seen one mention of #Xanga. Was it only ever just me and that one girl I liked who was the reason I joined?
@randomdent woah woah woah. What happened to #Xanga?
I play Words With Friends. I have since google stopped having scrabble available. I usually have 10 or 12 games going and I play a few times a day.
I have played 339 games against someone that I have known online since the heyday of Xanga. She wins 75% of the games (give or take). I have won the last 4 games. I would like to think I am suddenly brilliant but what I really think is she handed the game over to one of her kids!
