It remains in existence today as the Collins in HarperCollins, one of the 'big six' publishers. He was also a major player in the Scottish temperance movement, hence the choice of a public drinking fountain as a memorial as it provides clean, free water to people as an alternative to drinking alcohol.

The William Collins Memorial Drinking Fountain on Glasgow Green. Born in Eastwood in Renfrewshire in 1789, in 1819, Collins founded a book printing company with Charles Chambers. In 1848, he branched out into publishing, particularly religious and educational texts. While he died in 1853, the company he founded carried on and became William Collins, Sons and Co in 1868.
