An old sticker on a lamp post at Glasgow Green. I have no idea why it is there, but this is a slogan which has, over the years, been used in a variety of forms to highlight the importance of education, reading and gaining knowledge.

James Watt statue beside the People's Palace in Glasgow. It was created by Charles Grassby in 1864 and originally stood in a niche above the entrance to D. And J. Anderson's Atlantic Mills on Walkinshaw Street in the East End of Glasgow. When the mills were demolished in the 1930s, it was donated to the Glasgow Corporation and erected on Glasgow Green.

#ThickTrunkTuesday Fantastically Figured #Bark on a much worked-on #Veteran #Tree on #GlasgowGreen. Alas, no winter id key, scant clues & family time pressure meant no +'ve id. The city trip was for a #BarrowlandBallroom gig (#Elvana - what a hoot!) not botanical studies... well, maybe the odd #GinAndTonic

The Alex Harvey memorial plaque beside the People's Palace in Glasgow. Harvey was the lead singer of the legendary The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, which were formed in the city in August 1972.

Love this little sculpture on the Hugh MacDonald Memorial Drinking Fountain on Glasgow Green. I presume it's meant to be a lion's head, but it's quite anthropomorphic and always reminds me of Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. If I remember correctly, this same (or similar) sculpted waterspout appears on a number of Victorian drinking fountains around the city.

I hope none of the Santas taking part in today's Santa Dash at Glasgow Green had their sleighs impounded because they left them in the wrong place - if they did, it'll make their Christmas deliveries rather difficult!

The sign is the work of A Sign Of Humour.

Just over 4,000 Santas (including me!) assembled at Glasgow Green this morning for the 2025 Santa Dash. This 5k run was being done in aid of the Beatson Cancer Charity. This is a great local charity that is close to my heart, so if you enjoy the things I post throughout the year, please consider making a donation to them at https://www.beatsoncancercharity.org/donate/.

The fountain was moved to Glasgow Green in 1881 after it was subject to acts of vandalism. The rings on either side of the stone basin were attachments for metal cups on long chains to aid those who which to drink from it. It is one of the few Victorian public drinking fountains in Glasgow not to be associated with the Temperance Movement.

The Bonnie Wee Well on Glasgow Green. Originally sited on Gleniffer Braes in Paisley, this drinking fountain is a memorial to the poet and writer Hugh MacDonald who died in 1860. He is perhaps best remembered for his book Rambles Round Glasgow which as published in 1854 and detailed his walks in and around the city.
