The Commonwealth Compass in McPhun's Park in the East End of Glasgow. It was created to mark Glasgow's hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. It was originally surrounded by trees representing different parts of the commonwealth.

After he died in 1853, his company carried on, and in 1868 it became William Collins, Sons and Co. It remains in existence today as the Collins in HarperCollins, one of the 'big five' English language publishers.

The William Collins Memorial Drinking Fountain on Glasgow Green. Born in Eastwood in Renfrewshire, Collins founded a book printing company on Cangleriggs in Glasgow in 1819. Despite the fact it alienated some of his wealthy customers (who had interests in the slave plantations of the West Indies), Collins openly supported the abolition of slavery, and displayed emancipation petitions in his book shop.

An old sticker on a lamp post at Glasgow Green. I have no idea why it is there, but this is a slogan which has, over the years, been used in a variety of forms to highlight the importance of education, reading and gaining knowledge.

James Watt statue beside the People's Palace in Glasgow. It was created by Charles Grassby in 1864 and originally stood in a niche above the entrance to D. And J. Anderson's Atlantic Mills on Walkinshaw Street in the East End of Glasgow. When the mills were demolished in the 1930s, it was donated to the Glasgow Corporation and erected on Glasgow Green.

#ThickTrunkTuesday Fantastically Figured #Bark on a much worked-on #Veteran #Tree on #GlasgowGreen. Alas, no winter id key, scant clues & family time pressure meant no +'ve id. The city trip was for a #BarrowlandBallroom gig (#Elvana - what a hoot!) not botanical studies... well, maybe the odd #GinAndTonic

The Alex Harvey memorial plaque beside the People's Palace in Glasgow. Harvey was the lead singer of the legendary The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, which were formed in the city in August 1972.

Love this little sculpture on the Hugh MacDonald Memorial Drinking Fountain on Glasgow Green. I presume it's meant to be a lion's head, but it's quite anthropomorphic and always reminds me of Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. If I remember correctly, this same (or similar) sculpted waterspout appears on a number of Victorian drinking fountains around the city.

I hope none of the Santas taking part in today's Santa Dash at Glasgow Green had their sleighs impounded because they left them in the wrong place - if they did, it'll make their Christmas deliveries rather difficult!

The sign is the work of A Sign Of Humour.
