Russian users are receiving letters from Namecheap stating they have until March 6 to transfer their domains to another provider. For pro-regime users, it’s a nuisance, of course. Not a major one, though, since the pro-regime Russians tend to have their domains in the .ru zone, and have them registered at the Russian providers. Anti-regime users, including bloggers, foundations, and other organizations, on the other hand, need to have their domains registered abroad, and have no other choice. Roskomnadzor, the Russian communications watchdog (serving as the censorship agency for the regime) is blocking anti-Putin publications left and right, and has, on numerous occasions, subpoenaed the domain registrars based in Russia to stop providing services to those violating the Russian regulations1.

According to TechCrunch, the European Parliament has lost what was left of its collective sanity:
The European Parliament approved a new law on terrorist content takedowns yesterday, paving the way for one-hour removals to become the legal standard across the EU.
The regulation “addressing the dissemination of terrorist content online” will come into force shortly after publication in the EU’s Official Journal — and start applying 12 months after that.
The incoming regime means providers serving users in the region must act on terrorist content removal notices from Member State authorities within one hour of receipt, or else provide an explanation why they have been unable to do so.
Mark my words, this whole system can and will be abused by the governments to silence the people as they see fit. Without a doubt.
This SaaS stuff is going to be the end of everything. Now, instead of having to worry about securing your own stuff, you need to have an existential crisis every time a third party has a security incident because there NOTHING you can do about it.. *Sigh*
