When my partner and I moved to a new build in Cornwall in October 2023 we registered with South West Water for water and sewage services - on the instruction of the construction company.

At the end of June SWW decided that they weren’t our sewage supplier, and gave us the name of a company that was, telling us that the new company would contact us. They never did. So I did a bit of sleuthing and discovered that a completely different company is actually responsible for water and sewage.

So tomorrow I have to contact both SWW and the new company, to get this mess sorted out!

To me it just goes to show how pointless this all is. The company we should be paying have never contacted us (or others on the estate), while SWW are still collecting money for a service they apparently shouldn’t be providing. And probably know as much.

Meanwhile we have water in the taps and the sewage disappears off and gets processed in exactly the same facilities as everyone else’s.

Just going to repeat something.

#Ofwat ALWAYS had teeth.

It could have fined any water company 10% of its turnover at any time. It chose never to do so. So what confidence do we have that this new organisation will be more effective?

Why was #WaterPrivatisation not mentioned in Cunliffe's report today

Thur Southern Water boss doubles salary

Fri announcement of 60% increase in serious pollution incidents

YESTERDAY g'ment put together a raft of stuff which upon examination was nothing more than what the previous Tory g'ment was saying and nothing to do with this industry at all

And then Cunliffe puts out a recommendation to abolish #Ofwat but I don't think he can have that without want wanting to get rid of Environment Agency.

In 1884, when water privatisation was first considered, Joseph Chamberlain, an early Liberal politician, said, "It is difficult, if not impossible to combine the citizens' rights and interests and the private enterprise's interests, because the private enterprise aims at its natural and justified objective, the biggest possible profit"

Nothing has changed in that philosophy since that date.

I can't believe the government are letting our water bills go up by as much as £220 a year. I've just emailed my MP asking them to intervene. Can you join me? https://weownit.org.uk/act-now/stop-the-bill-hikes

We Own It

"Nothing demonstrates better the appalling environmental record of our polluting water companies than the fact that they are not even taking care of the highly protected areas that they actually own. It simply cannot be right that the payment of large dividends to shareholders and huge bonuses to bosses is prioritised before protecting SSSIs. This entire culture of polluting for profit must end”
