#Vizio Faces Scrutiny Over Incomplete #OpenSource Code Release

We at Software Freedom Conservancy are disappointed at some surprising news. Yesterday (THU 2026-01-08), we had a pretrial motions hearing scheduled in our historic impact litigation against Vizio. Just about an hour before the hearing's start-time, Judge Sandy Leal issued a minute order that rescheduled the hearing and (effectively) removed the trial (which was set to start this Monday 12 January 2025) from her calendar.
These two @lwn articles are prime examples of why good journalism matters and why you should pay money to make sure it thrives:
They both look beyond the shiny statements from the different parties involved and outside commentators such as @torvalds in this case and explain just how it is from a mostly neutral[1] point of view so that you can make your own judgments.
* GPLv2 and installation requirements – https://lwn.net/Articles/1052842/
* SFC v. VIZIO: who can enforce the GPL? – https://lwn.net/Articles/1052734/
[1] We are humans, and even if we try, we are never completely neutral – and a publication like #LWN that targets the FLOSS community obviously will somewhat look at things from the view of its target audience.
My mother disliked those who did not respect equal opportunity for everyone.
Once — queued for holiday shopping — she saw someone approach a massive checkout line & exclaim: “Is this line for *ME*!?!?!?!”.
Until she died, my mother recounted that incident each holiday to remind us that we all have to wait our turn & no one deserves special treatment: our rights and requirements to each other are equal.
So, I'm annoyed but not angry that the #Vizio trial was delayed: https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/jan/09/delay-in-start-of-vizio-trial/

I think you might not have realized who I was when you wrote that reply that linked to #SFC 🤣.
No worries about that; I'm (hopefully) not a diva, but deep down my inner #FOSS diva said: “DYKWIA?!?!?”
Seriously, I am really excited you know about our #Vizio case & it is part of your personal boycott of Vizio's products.
&, since it's fundraising season, I hope you'll consider becoming a Sustainer: https://sfc.ngo/sustainer/
