@emperorofmars Universal Scene Description (USD) is a good candidate for a new standard interchange format. It was created by Pixar but it's Open Source. I think FOSS projects like Godot and Blender should invest heavily in compatibility and further development of USD, since it's already relatively commonly used and is already Open Source.

During Blender Conference 2022, the most active Blender-USD stakeholders participated in a project review meeting. There was general consensus on the direction of the project, but it was clear that Blender needed to provide more resources to quickly and effectively handle contributions coming from individuals and organizations. For the past few months, recruiting efforts to find a dedicated senior developer for this role have not been successful, and the Blender core developers have stepped up ...
Phew, the new #Alembic exporter is done! It's now using the same code base as the #UniversalSceneDescription exporter, paving the way for the future. And fixing a bug reported by @3DBystedt
Now it's waiting for review at https://developer.blender.org/D7664
Last week I finished some final tweaks to Blender's @[email protected] Universal Scene Description exporter, and I took it out of the "experimental" features. It's now always enabled in our daily builds!
Look at that, I merged the #Mantaflow and #USD branches, and exported the result of the fluid sim without any problem to USD.
