This is a contradiction, but does anyone know of a relatively privacy friendly GPS pet tracker? @thenewoil ?

I know it'll be 24/7 location tracking, but something that at least isn't tied to a major surveillance company like #Google, #Apple or #Amazon, or force me to keep their app running 24/7 like #Tile / #Trackr.

Ideal would be self hosted, but honestly I'd love any idea more private than an Apple Air Tag.

Any ideas / boosts appreciated!

I was the master of losing my wallet. Now I have a phone case / wallet combo so I can always call it. Sometimes the battery ran out, so I set up #HomeAssistant to set off an alarm when the battery got to 2%, so I could call it first. I also have #GadgetBridge set up to let me call from my watch and #KdeConnect to call from my desktop / laptop.

I still lose my wallet sometimes, but my systems for finding it again are pretty robust.

Now if I can just finally convince @pine64 to make an open #Tile / #Trackr equivalent, I can stop losing my keys all the time...

I've been trying to talk @pine64 into making something like this for years. I've never gotten a no, but then I certainly haven't gotten a yes, either.

We desperately need a FOSS version of something like this though given how much the apps for Tile / Trackr etc, collect location data.

#Pine64 #FOSS #Tile #Trackr

@SarraceniaWilds Been there. I'm desperate for a privacy preserving bluetooth tracker to help find my keys like #Trackr / #Tile, but alas it doesn't seem to exist yet. @pine64 this would be the perfect new product for you if you're interested... small, cheap, no alternative, existing electronics already exists...

Can anyone recommend a device with the most basic bluetooth tracker functionality that isn't horrifically privacy invasive? (Ie not Trackr or Tile)

I'm just looking for something small I can use #GadgetBridge (or similar FOSS app) to play a sound so I can find it.

I don't want it to connect to any proprietary app or server, but dang I need something. Losing stuff thanks to ADHD is an ongoing nightmare!

Thank you for any suggestions!

I would really love a longer range, #FOSS alternative to #Tile / #Trackr, even if it doesn't have the pinpoint on a map feature. Just the part that lets you see if you're getting closer on your phone and push a button (on the phone) to get it to make a sound.

The problem with Tile / Trackr is that they force all kinds of location tracking to be sent back to #Google/their manufacturers by demanding location always be on, when I just want to find my keys when I need them.

@ramob
I'm really curious about the #Pinephone #LoRa case, too. Personally I would *love* to see a #FOSS #privacy friendly alternative to #Tile / #Trackr. I mean, LoRa would have a much better range than Bluetooth, better security I suspect and meanwhile Tile and Trackr have become privacy nightmares demanding always on location tracking and having your phone be used by their network even when you're not using their app.

A LoRa beacon+speaker could be *so* much better!
@lupyuen

@lupyuen Meanwhile #Tile / #Trackr have become more and more of a #privacy nightmare, demanding always on location tracking on your phone before they'll even let you look for your beacon.

Sadly though, I have yet to find anything vaguely open that will actually play a sound in a similar way in #BLE land. I wonder if #LoRa could be shoehorned into a beacon that could play a sound and roughly estimate distance away...?

@thenewoil Do you know of any vaguely #privacy respecting alternative to the #tile / #trackr #bluetooth trackers for finding lost keys etc. I just want something I can contact by bluetooth to have it make a sound to let me know where it is. All the options I've found so far require 24/7 location tracking by a commercial company via a proprietary, closed source app.
