The #demolition of a dilapidated 150-year-old #mansion in #Launceston, in #Tasmania's north, has prompted questions about gaps in #heritage protection.

The Victorian-era home was earmarked for heritage listing over two decades ago, but was never placed on the #StateHeritageRegister.

The loss of the property at 180 George Street has sparked anger and disappointment among locals and one heritage advocate who labelled the destruction as "scandalous". #auspol #taspol

Tasmanian maths:

Let's help first time house buyers into the market by cutting $10,000 from the current first time buyers grant.

(I guess the money for the stadium has to come from somewhere?)

Tasmania’s first home owner grant to drop to $20,000 in state budget

The HIA had been calling for the grant to be set at $50,000…

Anybody wondering what a Coalition budget at a Federal level would be like, keep an eye on Tasmania and what they announce.

@NickSchwanck Exactly! And… ferries, health services, education, public transport and parking to go with stadiums, refueling facilities for the flagship research vessel…..

The dead fish waste disaster that Tasmania failed to plan for

High-volume salmon mortalities last year swamped Tasmania's waste streams as companies scrambled to find somewhere to accept them, documents show. There are now concerns the state remains unprepared for future mass deaths.

Hell hath no fury like a tasmanian mother receiving a tassal salmon tea towel, brought home by their child who was "gifted" this toxic BS to take home from school.
It's only on the meta of MP for franklin Peter George, so instead of linking, here's what I'd do with such a tea towel.
Vintage tea towel printed with the same vinyl that is used for fossil fuel promoting rugby sweaters.

@stephengentle The good news is that the Federal and Tasmanian State Governments have given the workers a stay of execution.

They're covering three weeks' pay: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-23/analysis-liberty-bell-bay-wages-rescue-package/106586958

It's better than being sacked, stood down, or placed on indefinite leave as of tomorrow (Friday).

But they'll be back in the same position in three weeks unless a buyer comes forward.

Now.

If you support the idea of Australia having a viable manufacturing sector, then keeping the country's only manganese smelter open could be seen as nationally important.

In which case, it should probably be nationalised.

But that's another story.

Rescue package 'better than nothing', but uncertainty remains for smelter workers

Three weeks of wages have been guaranteed for Liberty Bell Bay smelter workers, but with no buyer locked in, questions remain about what happens next.
