Hunger Strike Statement

My name is Maja. I was illegally extradited to Hungary almost a year ago. Since then, I have been held here in inhumane prolonged solitary confinement. Yesterday, on 4 June 2025, a decision was supposed to be made about my petition to be transferred to house arrest. That decision was postponed. My prior petitions to be transferred to house arrest have been rejected. I am no longer willing to endure this unbearable situation and wait for decisions from a judiciary that has systematically violated my rights again and again in recent months. For that reason, I am beginning a hunger strike today, 5 June 2025. I demand to be transferred back to Germany, to be able to return to my family, and to be able to participate in the trial in Hungary from my home.

I can no longer tolerate the prison conditions in Hungary. My cell was under 24-hour video surveillance for more than three months. For over seven months, I had to wear handcuffs any time I was outside my cell and sometimes inside my cell too, regardless of whether I was buying things, having Skype calls, or meeting with visitors. Officers conduct hourly visual inspections in my cell, including at night, which always means turning the lights on. I have to submit to body searches, during which I have to undress completely. Visits happened in separate rooms where a screen separated me from my family members, lawyers, and official representatives. The officers have left my cell in complete chaos after cell checks. The architecture prevents me from seeing sufficient daylight. The tiny courtyard is made of concrete and there is a grate across the top of it. I cannot control the temperature of the water in the shower. My cell is continuously overrun by bedbugs and cockroaches. I am not sufficiently provided with balanced and fresh food.

Additionally, I am in prolonged solitary confinement. No contact with other prisoners was possible at all for almost six months. Even now, I see and hear other people for less than an hour per day. This permanent deprivation of human contact is deliberately meant to do mental and bodily harm. That is why the European Prison Rules provide for “at least two hours of meaningful human contact a day”. That is why “prolonged solitary confinement” – the confinement of a prisoner for at least 22 hours a day for more than 15 days – is considered inhumane treatment or torture according to the Nelson Mandela Rules adopted by the United Nations. Here in Hungary, I have been buried alive in a prison cell, and this pre-trial detention can last up to three years in Hungary.

For these reasons, I should never have been extradited to Hungary. The Berlin court of appeals and the Special Commission “Linx” of the State Office of Criminal Investigations in Saxony[1] planned and executed my extradition and in doing so very deliberately circumvented my lawyers and the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. On 28 June 2024, a few hours after my instant-extradition, the Constitutional Court ruled that I could not be extradited for the time being. On 6 February 2025, it ruled that my extradition was illegal. To date, no one who took part in it has been held accountable. Thus far, there have been no reparations for me.

I would like my hunger strike to be a warning that no one else should be extradited to Hungary. Right now, that regard needs to go above all to Zaid from Nuremberg, who is very acutely under threat of extradition to Hungary. I declare my solidarity with all antifascists who are being prosecuted in the Budapest proceedings.
