Today in Labor History May 15, 1943: Eighteen years before the famous Woolsworth’s Lunch Counter Sit-In, members of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) staged a sit-in at Jack Spratt’s, a coffee house in Chicago. Twenty-eight people entered Jack Spratt's in groups of 2, 3, or 4. Each group had at least one African American member. In each group, the whites were served while the negroes were refused service. The whites would either pass their food to the negroes in their group or would refuse to eat until everyone in the group was served. Other customers in the coffee house also joined the sit-in. The manager called the police, who came, but told the manager that they would either have to serve the patrons or find another acceptable solution, since no laws had been broken. Ultimately, everyone was served, though it was hours after they had first arrived. CORE members returned several times afterward and confirmed that their sit-in had successfully changed Jack Spratt's policy.
