This scarf is a gift for my uncle, inspired by quartz clusters we saw together backpacking in Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. From what I've been reading I think they were formed by intrusive igneous rock forming around xenoliths, and by cooling very slowly forming the incredible quartz crystals we saw, which looked like rings around the darker xenoliths in the weathered rock face we saw. I'm not trained as a geologist though and would love to find more information about the geology of Cottonwood Canyon from someone with some real expertise!
The wool is targhee roving I got at the nor cal ren faire. I spun it on my small cross arm spindle and wove it on a loom I've been borrowing from a friend. It's plain weave set at 8epi. It looked very open on the loom, but fulled into a wonderfully bouncy and dense fabric.
After fulling I scoured the fabric, then used rubber bands to do this shibori inspired dye process. After putting on the rubber bands I gave it a bath in tannins I extracted from an oak gall, then in a bath of cool water with just a tiny bit of dissolved ferrous sulfate. It was so exciting to see the fabric turn grey in a a matter of just a few minutes when I put it in the iron bath!

AHHH!!! LOOK AT THEM!!!
tomorrow when it's light out I'll take some close up detail pictures to share, but I'm VERY pleased with how these came out
the pillowcases are very fun, bc I prepped them first, when I had energy and my fingers/back didn't hurt 🤣
the top sheet may be my least successful attempt ... I decided to fold it a bunch of times before tying bits of it (to save time and my fingers), and I must have tied it too tightly for any dye to penetrate, but I was so worried it was going to be solid purple 🤣
the fitted sheet might be my most successful attempt, despite not putting in nearly as much dye as the pillows. I decided to go super minimalist bc I prepped the fitted sheet last and I was running out of time, but what I love about it is the gentle mottling, due to the dye not distributing evenly in the majority of the fabric. it's not something I did on purpose, the pot just wasn't big enough to really stir the sheet
I'm doing kanoko shibori bc I have all the required tools, but sometime soon (for the second set of sheets) I want to acquire a long enough PVC pipe to play with arashi shibori, bc that shit looks AMAZING
I'm also interested in trying itajime shibori, which is where you fold the fabric a bunch of times and use pressure from two wood (or other sturdy material) blocks clamped onto the fabric to resist the dye, and you can get really cool patterns
taking advantage of waking up BEFORE EIGHT 🙃 by doing a ton of laundry while working on a #dye project I've been meaning to get to for a couple weeks now
I've been needing new sheets forever; Midna loves digging in the sheets with her little claws and now there's a BUNCH of tears and holes in the fabric. I've thought about mending them, but they're knit (T-shirt fabric) instead of woven, so I may just tear the sheets up for yarn or use them for another project, idk
BUT I bought two sets of pale purple (woven) sheets with the intention of dumping them into a #dyebath to make them dark purple. however, since they arrived, I've been reading a lot about #shibori, so I'm attempting some shibori-like dye resists
Midna is very interested in the damp bedding on the suddenly cleared off kitchen island, so bonus kitty photo!
