Gorseinon charity shop invites locals to strut their style at £10 fashion challenge

The free event takes place on Thursday 2 October at 6pm at the Gorseinon Road store, and organisers are calling on shoppers to get involved.

Style on a shoestring

Donation centre manager Gareth Carnegie said the show is about proving that second‑hand can be stylish:

“The fashion show will celebrate style for under £10, and show how second‑hand can be fashionable. Everyone is welcome to take part in the catwalk and style a look. We are looking for fifteen customers to model their chosen outfit on the catwalk and those that get involved can keep it! They also have the chance to win a prize for best style and look.”

Two £50 Charity Shop Gift Cards will be awarded for the best outfits, with refreshments and late‑night shopping also on offer.

Three days of sustainable fashion

The fashion show kicks off three days of events at the Gorseinon donation centre:

  • Thursday 2 October, 6–8pm – Fashion Show (£10 challenge)
  • Friday 3 October, 10am–4pm – Repair Café, with volunteers showing how to fix buttons, mend holes and extend the life of clothes
  • Saturday 4 October, 9.30am–5pm – Kilo Sale, where shoppers can bag bargains by weight

Gareth added:

“Our message is ‘fix it, don’t ditch it’. Please come along to the Repair Café for a fun day — and if you can’t make that, we’ll have lots of bargains at our Kilo Sale, so grab your tote bag and get thrifting.”

National campaign

The Gorseinon events form part of Sustainable Fashion Week, running across the UK from 29 September to 5 October.

Nicole Morarescu, Environment and Sustainability Coordinator at Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), said:

“Creating runway‑worthy and head‑turning outfits doesn’t have to be expensive. Sustainable Fashion Week is all about celebrating second‑hand fashion and showing people how to create incredible looks on a budget of £10 or less.”

SATCoL, the trading arm of The Salvation Army, runs more than 250 charity shops across the UK and says it diverts 77,000 tonnes of textiles from landfill each year.

That brings me to today’s quote, which I think ties in beautifully with the theme of second chances and the value of what has come before: Todays Quote is by Peter Drucker... who once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
