@actuallyautistic On a related note to my last post, I came across this today... Wow!

My 35-Year-Old Son Is Learning to Drive. It’s Complicated.

Sam Huber’s autistic mind processes every moment and movement in technicolor intensity as he struggles to get his license. For his father, Robert, the question isn’t can he—but should he?

By Robert Huber and Samuel Huber· 4/27/2025

Excerpt: "I look down at the controls, and I get a little dizzy looking at all of the knobs, gears, pedals, and the steering wheel. The thought of having to move my hands and feet in sync to get this bucket of bolts going is scary.

"After checking that all the mirrors are to my liking, I start the car, which roars like a lioness on the hunt. I want to scream, Why does this seem so loud when I am in the driver’s seat?!?! I reach into my pocket for my trusty headphones to block out this horrible noise, but they aren’t there. Sweet baby Jesus! Am I going to have to listen to this car the whole time? How can anyone focus on driving with that noise?"

So, I'm finding these lists pretty relatable. Learning how to focus and multi-task were a bit challenging, but luckily, I had mastered the gas pedal / brake pedal / gear shifting on my grandfather's riding mower, and then had Driver's Ed classes when I was 17. And yes -- I am a STICKLER for the rules of the road!

From: Can Autistic People Drive? published in 2022

"Research suggests that drivers who are autistic may experience the following difficulties:

- challenges with concentrating on own driving while paying attention to what other drivers are doing on the road
- slower detection time for road hazards
- being easily distracted
- becoming too bound by rules
- inability to identify social cues, like tailgating
- nervousness related to comorbidities, like ADHD or anxiety
- reduced self-confidence

Strengths associated with autism and driving

On the flip side, research also shows that autistic drivers have certain strengths that other drivers may not possess. These include:

- desire to strictly adhere to driving rules
- obeying traffic rules
- limited risk-taking, like speeding
- paying closer attention to their overall driving environment
- being able to remember details and information for long periods of time"

Something has been happening to me a lot while I've been #driving and it's really making me angry. Does this happen to anyone else? Is this on the rise?

I'm stopped, waiting to make a left turn. An oncoming #car with no one behind them gently slows down to "let me go." This imperceptible slowing is not obvious to me, especially since I'm ready to go after they pass, and it leads to us both wasting time for no reason.

Just take the right of way when you have it. Please.

John Ducker: Is it time to allow cyclists to make an 'Idaho stop'?

A 2010 study showed that, in Idaho, cyclists’ injuries were reduced after the state removed the requirement to come to a full stop at a stop sign.

Wish people understood the rules of the road.

An SUV almost hit me instead of letting me zipper merge at a closed lane because I didn't wait in the pointless three-block-long line and instead took the open lane.

Just because you chose to not do something that demonstrably improves traffic doesn't mean you should straddle two lanes to prevent someone else from doing it.

People need a traffic law refresher. This happens to me multiple times a year lol

Near me, the experienced #cyclists tend to yell things like "Passing on you left!" when coming up behind each other and behind pedestrians. But with the proliferation of inexperienced #bicyclists due to #ebikes, and with their tendency to go so darn fast, I've been getting a lot more surprises from behind me.

It's especially dangerous for pedestrians with a #dog on a leash, some of whom have been (correctly, for roads) trained to stay to their human's LEFT on walks, or who were never trained to stay on one side of their human in the first place. With slower #bikes and fair warning yelled out, that didn't tend to be a problem before.

Squirrels can suddenly inspire attempts at chasing them, even by dogs on a leash, on either side of the trail. #Dogs do unexpected things.

PLEASE yell out "Passing!" folks (or ring that bell). Don't just zip up from behind.
