[Swiss German, Lombard. Etc? 😊 ]
“This is a map of the 4 national languages of Switzerland, but leaving out the parts that are not permanently inhabited due to high altitude, since you could argue whether it even makes sense to define a language in an uninhabited area. The white area is defined as having an altitude above 1,900 metres except for the towns above that treshold being: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, Chandolin, Juf, Avers, Lü and the Simplon pass, which [the cartographer] manually excluded from the white area. This map visualizes well what language boundaries are due to physical obstacles vs those which arent…”

Do you know that #Romansh is🇨🇭Switzerland's 4th national language?

40,000 people primarily spoke Romansh, mainly in Grisons (the region on the map)

Romansh is divided into 5 regional dialect groups and a pan-regional variety was introduced a few decades ago

Tiny #Lü, in #Switzerland’s south-eastern corner, in #Romansh speaking Val #Müstair, has got a name not too hard to remember. Also apart from the nice name (which derives from lux, for light) it’s a lovely and really quiet place. And it was the departure point for our hike today.

Spent the night at my brother's place in the town I call home (one of the two homes tbh, divorced parents). Here the announcements for trains only happen in #German and #Romansh (the forth official language of #Switzerland). I never learned Romansh but it's on my bucket list ❤️

There are two #languages in northern Italy (where my father is from), Friulian and Ladin that share some similarities with the language spoken here… (1/3)

In Romansh the word for 'book' is 'cudesch' - this comes from the Latin word 'codex'. It sounds much more impressive if you go to a bookshop and ask them if they have any codexes on gardening.
