For today's #BirdOfTheDay alternative theme #Robin. Here is a "Robin in the rain, what a saucy fellow. Robin in the rain, mind your socks of yellow." #Robins #birds #nature #birdphotography #ECK #Birdlife #Ontario #Canada
I have seen my robin friends around for a few weeks, but was devastated that they didn’t seem to be nest building on our property. Since we moved in, we have had a nest in our deck eaves every year from some generation of this family. Today I went out to take out the compost and found this!!! Can’t wait for baby robins!!

It's baby bird season! 🥰 Here's a sweet little robin being cared for at the Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital.

@ShutterRatata great photo.#Robins (#Erithacus #rubecula, #Muscicapidae) are endearing to us, partly due to their short #flightdistance. Combined with their attractive #appearance, they evoke positive associations in us. Therefore, they e.g. play a role in #culturaltraditions (Christian legends). They have twice been #BirdoftheYear in Germany. In 1963, robins were the first animal, in which the presence of a #magneticsense (#orientation via Earth's #magneticfield) was proven. Text: S.F.Wirth

Robin sighting in Toronto, a sign of spring?

yes and no

#Robins travel in the winter from the north to southern states and warmer climates but some Robins stay in the north, depending on food availability, and those who traveled to the south might return back to north with spring.

Robins have a wide wintering range because of their downy feathers that help them live through snow. Both food availability and temperature can affect their whereabouts, and migration in the winter and the spring.

After warm shirtsleeve weather last weekend, today was back to just-below-freezing temperatures. A few stray snowflakes wandering around in the cold breeze, as if lost and confused to find themselves alone, the ground snow all gone.

But there were robins! I counted more than two dozen robins hopping around on the ground, in just the space of a single block! Signs of spring, despite the cold!

So, first #Robin sighting in the yard today. I'll be feeding them some sterilized eggshells and "gummy worms" (dried mealworms soaked in water for 15 minutes) and other goodies. The local worms are scarce because of the temp changes.

What do robins eat?

"Robins feed on insects (especially beetles) and worms. You might notice one following you about as your dig up your garden hoping to nab a few worms as you unearth them.

Robins can also eat fruit, seeds, suet, crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts and raisins. They particularly enjoy mealworms.

Robins are natural ground feeders, so feeding trays are ideal. Make a mixture of bird seed, sunflower hearts and mealworms, sprinkle it out on a tray and wait for the robins to arrive.

As they’re such fans of mealworms, you can give them an extra helping hand by soaking dried mealworms in water, giving the robins some valuable moisture from the food."
