Postdocs and PhD students hit hard by Trump’s crackdown on science

As US federal grants remain frozen and budget cuts loom, anxiety and fear grip early-career researchers.

The @NulliusInVerba episode on ethics review has some interesting parts and is worth listening if you are interested in #ResearchEthics
https://nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/irb/

To me several sections sounded like they implied that the ethics committee would "approve" research.

I would content that this is not the case. I provide below two quotes from @ukrio sources (both interesting reads beside this point).

How is this in other institutions? In other countries?

Episode 40: Tabula de Ethicis Recensionibus | Nullius in Verba

In this episode, we discuss review boards for research with human subjects. Are they necessary? Are they efficient? Are scientists well equipped to make judgements about ethics? And are economists more ethical than psychologists?    Shownotes Whitney, S. N. (2015). Balanced ethics review: A guide for institutional review board members. Springer. Schrag, Z. M. (2010). Ethical imperialism: Institutional review boards and the social sciences, 1965–2009. JHU Press. Nice listen on my way to work, very helpful to focus my mind for a session of our School #ResearchEthics Committee:

Interesting thought about the amount of effort required in application procedures [38:24min]:
"If you cut away the ethics part [...] not a lot would change."

Introduction to Research Governance

Health research, whether population based, epidemiological or randomised controlled trials, must comply with a host of standards and legislation. The course is led by staff who have many years' experience in health research and have been involved in a wide range of high impact health research projects. Invited tutors provide specialist expertise for complex areas such as Data Protection.

This paper discusses the Danish system of #DataGovernance for the reuse of #HealthData.

The authors discuss how the system relies on a balance between extensive data usage and persisting limitations and could serve as an example of how such balance can be found.

The team emphasises how such an approach requires continuous adaptation through regular political negotiations of the ethical underpinning.

Good governance helps against questionable research practice (QRPs), notes Simon Kolstoe. #ResearchGovernance #QuestionableResearchPractice #ResearchIntegrity #UKRIOevents

Processes of #ResearchIntegrity, #ResearchEthics, and #ResearchCulture should be aligned with researchers and not coming from outside, notes Simon Kolstoe.

#ResearchGovernance teams and ethics committees need to work with researchers and understand the details.
