Et pour celles et ceux qui se demanderaient pourquoi on n'érige pas des barrières défensives comme en Islande... La topographie locale rend l'entreprise compliquée. Le Piton de la Fournaise est situé dans un amphithéâtre naturel, l'enclos Fouqué, délimité au nord, à l'ouest et au sud par des falaises (les "Remparts"), et à l'est par l'océan Indien. Pour la lave, la seule échappatoire est donc vers l'est, dans un toboggan appelé les "Grandes Pentes", qui dévale 1 500 mètres de dénivelé. Dans ces conditions, dévier la lave constitue un sacré défi !
