#NativeAmericanCalling - #OilDrilling vs #CulturalPreservation at #ChacoCanyon

May 27, 2026 By Art Hughes

"The #Trump administration is moving to undo a 20-year ban on #OilAndGasDrilling near Chaco Canyon, a place of major cultural significance to #pueblos in the Southwest. The threat of new oil leases on nearly 340,000 acres of #PublicLand surrounding Chaco Canyon has put the site on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s [#NTHP] list of America’s #MostEndangeredSpaces. It is the second time on the same list for the land that is already a protected National Historic Park and a #UNESCOWorldHeritageSite. The moratorium was instituted in 2023 by then-Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who is a Laguna Pueblo citizen. We’ll hear about the options ahead for the land and the cultural significance it holds."

#Trump has packed both panels with “allies”, putting his executive assistant & other political appointees on the “fine-arts” commission & installing his staff secretary as leader of the #planning commission.

Thursday’s vote by the Commission of “Fine Arts”, whose job is to vet the design of monuments & other major projects in the capital, represents a key approval as the #Trump White House seeks to begin construction. Another panel that oversees federal #construction projects, the National Capital #Planning Commission, is set to review the proposed design for the #arch June 4.

Trump rejected the idea of lowering the structure’s height, an architect said. #Military #veterans have sued to stop the project.

#Trump officials say they can build 250-foot #arch without Congress’s okay

To build the “triumphal” arch near Arlington Cemetery, the admin wants to rely on a 100-year-old authorization for a different project on the site. Hell no.

I am so sick of the constant f⁕⚠︎ing bullshit #Congress & the #Judiciary keep letting these asshats get away with!!!

The administration say they are building on a project authorized by Congress a century ago. Lawyers and Democrats said the argument is an attempt to evade federal law.
