#WabanakiNations, Mills are finding common ground

In the final chapter of the governor’s administration, she and tribal leaders are making progress on tribal priorities

Reuben M. Schafir, February 19, 2026

AUGUSTA — "#Wabanaki tribal leaders, state lawmakers and Gov. Janet Mills might not be entirely on the same page. But they’re reading the same book.

"Lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee heard from tribal leaders and their allies Thursday during a hearing on two bills that address the applicability of #FederalIndianLaw in Maine.

"Statements made by tribal chiefs and Mills’ representative hint at a tone shift in the ongoing dialogue between the tribes and the governor.

"Both bills are sponsored by Sen. #RachelTalbotRoss, D-Portland, and would make federal Indian law broadly applicable to the Wabanaki Nations. #LD785 would also make other changes recommended in 2020 by a task force of lawmakers and tribal leaders, including repealing restrictions on tribal land acquisition and the expansion of tribal authority over hunting and fishing on their lands."

#Navajos Warn of Secretive Tribal Government Reform

Dine' Grassroots coalition, "spoke of the #bribes, backdoor deals and tribal government #corruption involved in the tribe's deals with #EnergyCompanies."

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Jan. 27, 2026

"Navajos warned of a secretive Navajo government reform that is underway that would change #Diné life, and silence the voices of the people for generations to come.

"#ChiliYazzie, former #Shiprock Council Delegate and Chapter President, said proposing the government reform as a 'yes or no' question for the Dine' voters on the ballot in 2026 is 'an abuse of our people.' "

#RedLake Passes Resolution Prohibiting #ICE From Entering Without Court Order

Jan 27, 2026 | By: Lakeland News

"The Red Lake Tribal Council has passed a resolution prohibiting Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers from entering the Red Lake Nation unless they have a specific court order signed by a judge with jurisdiction to sign such an order.

"The resolution, which passed on a 10-0 vote, says the Tribal Council has been watching ICE actions in Minnesota and is 'ashamed and disgusted at the obvious violations of constitutional rights directed at United States citizens by ICE officers.'

"They add that, with Tribal Council members being made aware of a Leech Lake band member being apprehended in the Walker area, they suspect that it is just a matter of time before ICE officers attempt to enter the Red Lake Nation.

"The resolution says no ICE officer or federal officer may be present on the Red Lake Nation without the presence of a Red Lake officer, and that the federal officers may only be present for as long as it takes to serve the order. In addition, it says no ICE officer or federal officer in the service of ICE shall be permitted to engage in a fishing expedition in search of any person, and that such officers are prohibited from approaching any individual, home, or vehicle outside the presence of a Red Lake officer."

#Oglala President Bans #ICE and U.S. Border Patrol from #OglalaLakota Nation, #PineRidge, South Dakota

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, January 28, 2026

"Oglala Lakota President #FrankStarComesOut issued a Presidential Proclamation today banning both ICE and the U.S. Border Patrol from the Oglala Lakota Nation. The #OglalaSioux Tribal Council banned ICE, and rejected an agreement to work with immigration officials, on January 21.

"President Star Comes Out points out in the Proclamation today that the U.S. Border Patrol is working with ICE in its 'unlawful conduct against Native people in #Minneapolis' -- which is within the Aboriginal Territory of the Great Sioux Nation.

"Calling it 'egregious conduct,' the President's Proclamation states that ICE and the U.S. Border Patrol are targeting minorities throughout the United States, and Native people are being detained and injured, in violation of Treaties and civil rights."

NOW: Live #Diné People’s Press Conference on #NavajoGovernment Concerns

"A group of grassroots organizations convened in Dec 2025 to discuss concerns related to the #NavajoNation, these concerns have been formulated into position statements to be presented to the Navajo Nation leadership including the Navajo Nation Council and the Office of the President and Vice President. These positions will be presented at the Press Conference to be held in front of the Navajo Nation Council Chambers on January 27, 2026, at 9 am.

- The proposal to reform the Navajo government drafted by the Office of Navajo Government Development has been analyzed and is found to be replete with foundational issues, we are recommending that the proposal not be presented to the Navajo people as a referendum initiative as proposed by the ONGD

- The proposal by the #Trump administration to expedite natural resources #extraction with little or no #environmental review is a critical concern

- The depletion of the #waters of Navajo lands and the continued lost of water rights must be consciously and deliberately addressed by our Navajo Nation leadership

- The uninhibited incursion by the federal Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency on Indian lands and arrest and abuse of #NativeAmerican citizens is greatly concerning

Diné Grassroots Coalition is a coalition comprised of Diné community members concerned about the state of the Navajo Nation."

#Navajo President Claims No Money for #TribalIDs, while #ICE Terrorizes Native People and the Nation

The Navajo President plays politics -- while ICE grabs Navajos. Meanwhile, Native people are calling out their tribal governments for making money from misery from hotels and contracts, and sharing intelligence with ICE. The secretive ICE deportation flights are in this tangled web of heartbreak and misery.

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Updated Jan. 23, 2026

Excerpt: "While ICE is terrorizing the nation, Navajo President [and #Trump suck-up] #BuuNygren, playing politics, says there are no funds for tribal IDs. At the same time, ICE is out-of-control and making violent arrests in Minneapolis. Several #NativeAmerican governments are profiteering from this misery and being exposed by tribal members. Meanwhile, the secretive deportation flights continue, and Guantanamo is one of the destinations."

#OglalaLakota Nation Bans #ICE, Rejects #ImmigrationAgreement

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Jan. 23, 2026

Excerpt: "The Oglala Sioux Tribe unanimously banned ICE from #PineRidge and rejected a federal immigration agreement, during a special session of the #OglalaSioux Tribal Council on Jan. 21, 2026.

"Upholding their #sovereignty, the Oglala Tribal Council confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement asked the Tribe to enter into Section 287(g), a federal agreement that would have allowed tribal law enforcement to act as immigration agents for ICE.

"The Tribal Council formally rejected any Section 287(g) agreement and voted to ban all ICE agents and activities from Pine Ridge.

"The Council resolution also states there is to be nation-to-nation consultation with the Interior Secretary, as required by federal law, concerning any detained Oglala Lakota.

"During the live broadcast, Council members said Lakota are being intensely harassed in #DenverCO, and #SiouxFallsSD."

'I don't trust that water plant': Hundreds evacuated so far from #FirstNation in northern #Ontario

With half of 2,300 residents already out, CBC was in the #Cree FirstNation to report on how people are coping

Jonathan Migneault · CBC News · Posted: Jan 16, 2026 11:58 AM EST | Last Updated: January 16

Excerpt: "The streets are quieter in #Kashechewan First Nation.

"Some children are still playing hockey outside on a snow-packed road, but that would have been more common just three weeks earlier.

"About half of the 2,300 people living in the remote fly-in community in northern Ontario have already left for cities to the south — including Timmins, Ont., Kingston and Niagara Falls — as part of evacuation efforts that began earlier this month.

"It's all because of concerns over the aging and damaged water-treatment plant in the Cree First Nation.

"On Jan. 4, Chief Hosea Wesley declared a state of emergency. People were told not to drink the water and the plant effectively shut off the taps providing it to their homes.

"Technicians with #NorthernWaterworks were brought in to repair the damage and worked to get the water running again. But they're awaiting test results from a lab in North Bay for health authorities to determine if the water is safe to drink.

"Adrian Sackaney still doesn’t trust the local water supply.

"He goes to the nearby Albany River, which flows into James Bay, to collect large chunks of ice

"Every day, Sackaney hauls that ice to his home with a snowmobile so it can be put to use when it melts.

" 'I use that ice for my kids to take a bath,' Sackaney said. 'It's hard work to go get ice too … I don't trust that water plant right now.'

"While evacuations continue, Sackaney plans to stay behind."

Amid crisis in Kashechewan in northern Ontario, a tough choice: Melt ice for water or leave others behind | CBC News

Life is quieter in Kashechewan First Nation in northern Ontario. Some children can still be seen playing hockey on a snow-packed road, but that would have been more common three weeks earlier had the community's water-treatment plant not failed. Amid a state of emergency, about half of the 2,300 residents have already been evacuated to cities including Timmins, Kingston and Niagara Falls.
