Someone added: “next stop, Teh’ran”… just happens to rhyme with Viet Nam… so many similarities… bringing it all back for some of us…

Here’s a song I wrote last year as I tried to deal with my thoughts about everything going wrong in the world at that time.
Unfortunately, things haven’t improved since. Writing the song made me reflect on my own privileged position as a white male and how we sometimes choose to ignore moral issues when they conflict with our comfort.

I learned about Bob Crow from the song named after him by Fit and the Conniptions, from their 2017 album Old Blue Witch;

This is a fun album, full of piss and vinegar. Reminding me in parts of the some of David Rovics, especially his more tongue-in-cheek songs like Burn It Down, and rabble-rousing songs like The Commons and Black Flag Flying.

FTA! Songs Of The GI Resistance by Barbara Dane, released on Paredon in 1970.

"As opposition to the Vietnam War increased in the late 1960s, it began to emerge in the military community itself, primarily led by young draftees. Folk singer and political activist Barbara Dane lent her voice and support to resisting solders in a series of recorded performances at GI coffee houses near Army bases in Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina. The songs are a mix of traditional songs of protest and resistance, and original songs by Dane and draft resisters. " Folkways

the Lads from Bristol have written a new protest song; it's originally about the gatekeeping in the British folksinger community about treating the genre as a museum rather than a living culture, but methinks it could apply to holding on to _anything_ and not changing it in light of the changing world... just because something from the 18th century BN(*) is still relevant doesn't mean we can't have something _new_ that's also relevant, especially in light of things that were _there_ back then but never _sung about_ by folks of the dominant paradigm...

I just love this LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM T-shirt that I got from lovemusichateracism.edinburgh on Friday. I was going to save it for gigging, but decided it was too good to wait. I had compliments and positive vibes from so many people at work today, so it was the right move. Next step has got to be a T-shirt saying 'Love Music, Hate Fascism'!

(Hashtags up front, there's nothing graphic here, it's what's being _referred to_ that's... niet goed.)

U2 have come out with a new protest song, in the vein of "Pride" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday"... it's called Song of the Future, and it's pointing out what's going on in Iran, specifically calling out two names of people whose short lives were inspiration for further protest. I'm not going to list them here, I'm going to _make you go watch the video_.

Also, this makes me happy in a fierce kind of way; finally a Western voice - Bono - raising awareness of what's basically been under a news blackout particularly in America... now we have a song, let's make some noise!
