When can we start #prosecuting current #administration members for #crimes against #humanity? If that's not possible, they should have to face #civil trials for gobs and gobs of money that #bankrupts them forever. There should be consequences for such #sick, #deliberate, #criminal acts. "Following orders" is NOT a valid defence.

Trump Is Prosecuting a Congressional Democrat for Doing Her Job. The Media’s Response: No Big Deal.

The Trump administration hit Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver with criminal charges for doing oversight on ICE. The media barely blinked.

Harris Visits MAGA Areas of Pennsylvania, to Cut Into Trump’s Edge

The vice president, who appeared in #Johnstown and #Wilkes-#Barre, said she would
❇️ #remove#unnecessary degree #requirements” for some federal jobs,

a pitch to Mr. Trump’s base of voters without a college education in a part of the state where he expects to perform well.

Ms. Harris also emphasized her work in California
❇️ #prosecuting Mexican #drug #cartels,
and said as president she would continue to go after them “for pushing poisons like fentanyl on our children.”

The vice president’s Trump-country pitch amounted to a continuation of her appeal to moderate and right-leaning voters that began at the Democratic National Convention last month
and continued during Tuesday’s debate with the former president.

Harris Visits Red Areas of Pennsylvania, Hoping to Cut Into Trump’s Edge

The vice president, who appeared in Johnstown and Wilkes-Barre, pledged to remove “unnecessary degree requirements” for some federal jobs, aiming to compete in conservative-leaning areas.

#Prosecuting #Trump is perilous. Ignoring his #conduct would be worse.

…Most federal prosecutions have the government defending the interests of society writ large — against drug trafficking, or corporate fraud, or gun crimes. This prosecution is different. The #UnitedStates is defending itself, recoiling against an effort to undo the #democracy that Trump swore an oath to protect.

A hard but necessary call: The U.S. has indicted a former president to protect democracy.

WaPo Opinion On this Independence Day, we should reaffirm the #twinpillars of #democracy: #Voters (not the mob) pick their leaders, and #electedleaders (not #unelected #judges) make #policy decisions for which they are held accountable. Just as we need to preserve sanctity of elections (by #prosecuting #coup #instigators), democracy defenders need to address #judicialradicals#gross #distortion of our system, resulting in current #SupremeCourt’s subversion of #democracy. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/04/supreme-court-illegitimate-self-government/
Self-government is worth defending from an illegitimate Supreme Court

The transformation of the court into a partisan player contradicts the central premise of democracy.

Prosecuting Trump Is No Easy Decision | DCReport.org

A Harvard criminal law professor explains why prosecuting a former president is no easy decision to come to.

@gregladen Agreed. It may be true in theory, but it is dishonest to say “no one is above the law” in a practical sense. Enforcing the #law, #investigating, #prosecuting, obtaining conviction, and incarceration are all time and resource intensive processes. The “big fish” have or can obtain all the resources they need to contest and delay each step of the legal process. Public servants cannot afford to devote so much time and resources to the big fish unless it becomes a political issue. Even then, political pressure changes like the weather. So, in a practical sense, some people can evade the law. The law still applies to them, but they frequently do get away with their crimes.
