Tourism leads the pack in growing carbon emissions

"The most net emissions were reported in aviation, utilities and private vehicle use for travel. Australia ranked in the top 20 countries that together contributed three quarters of the total tourism carbon footprint in 2019.">>

Tourism leads the pack in growing carbon emissions

A UQ-led study shows greenhouse gas emissions from tourism have been growing more than 2 times faster than those from the rest of the global economy.

Australians rely heavily on private vehicles - combustion engines or EVs

"Car dependence causes various problems that are not adequately accounted for in current pricing regimes. These include carbon emissions, productivity costs of congestion, traffic deaths and injuries to people and animals, respiratory and systemic diseases from exhaust and tyre particles, and cardiovascular disease from sedentary behaviour."

EVs "generate many of the negative impacts of conventional vehicles, electric vehicles are not a sustainable mode of urban transport. And there is increasing recognition that moving from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles won’t reduce the impact of climate change within emergency timeframes."

"Australian cities need to move quickly and decisively away from the car as a means of urban transport. The best way to reduce damage from car use in cities is to reduce usage overall. "

The High Court decision on electric vehicles will make charging for road use very difficult

The High Court has ruled the right to charge an electric vehicle tax rests with the Commonwealth despite the Constitution not mentioning cars or roads.

Commuters battle horrific congestion on 26 lane highway. More lanes?
“You just can’t build your way out of congestion. It’s one of those things — the more you build, the more people come and fill those roads up...Authorities should be careful that development and road upgrades don’t further embed reliance on private cars.”
“You can’t keep building roads forever. It needs to be a multi-modal approach of public transport, roads and active transport as a whole system solution.”

Upgrading busy motorways like M1 may not be best solution for congestion woes

Millions of Australians face the daily frustration of delayed commutes, particularly on busy motorways. But as governments spend billions continually upgrading roads, experts say that might not be the best solution.

Private vehicle usage must be halved to cut emissions, Climate Council says

"Australia should aim to reduce transport emissions by 75 per cent by 2030
Public and active transport needs to triple to meet that goal
Eighty-one per cent of trips are made in private vehicles across Australia, but the report says that would need to drop to 36 per cent by the end of the decade.
That would mean 49 per cent of trips would have to occur on public transport and 15 per cent through active transit.
At the moment the average Australian household has two petrol cars in the garage.
One of the easier solutions would be to increase reliable #ElectricBusServices rather than working on larger infrastructure projects." Excerpt

Private vehicle usage must be halved to cut emissions, Climate Council says

The council says electric vehicles need to be adopted rapidly, but other measures must be taken to cut down transport emissions.
