Was reading a Wired article on the #Luce. While I don't hate the car โ€” having watched Auto Focus's video on it, I like a lot of the car's features โ€” I also don't love it, I don't find it aspirational. In general, my problem with it is the aesthetics. If I'm dropping the best part $700K on a car, I want a car that's dead-sexy. "Dead-sexy" used to be Ferrari's bread-and-butter. The Luce, though? It looks less like what I'd expect of Ferrari than I would of Lucid or maybe even Nissan. And while I get the whole "design needs to evolve" thing, that evolution also needs to make sense. One could make a car that's a radical departure from what a brand has previously produced but still be aligned to the brand's design-history. The Luce justโ€ฆ doesn't.

A longtime complaint I've had about
#EVs is that so many of them, you look at them and you immediately think is "yeah, that's EV" โ€ฆand not in a good way. And while the Luce doesn't necessarily spark that reaction, it also doesn't spark, "wow: I want that."

I'd say the Luce's design-departure was like when BMW let Chris Bangle run roughshod over their cars, but that wouldn't be accurate. Bangle's designs were polarizing, but they were at least unique. The Luce's design-departure is that Ferrari has produced a vehicle that looked like its aesthetics were conjured up by a risk-averse committee. And, I get that they turned the design over to an external company, but they didn't have to accept that design. Someone in Ferrari's leadership
should have looked at the car and said, "that's a good start, but it doesn't capture the Ferrari essence. Try again."
I Like Ferrari's Luce EV. But This Is Why It's Heartbreaking

Designed by Jony Ive and a host of ex-Cupertino colleagues, the Luce shows us what might have been had Apple made good on its $10 billion bet.
