If you think UK Higher Education is struggling there is one area where this is most pronounced and it’s the one I lead on in my University.

The number of publicly-funded doctoral studentships is falling sharply despite increased spending (partly because UKRI rightly increased stipends).

The biggest drop is in Engineering and Physical Sciences.

I knew all this but the actual numbers are terrifying.

So much for a knowledge economy.
