The off-script moment that embarrasses Giorgia Meloni. A man gets on stage in Milan, hands her a book and says: “I hope for Mattarella’s resignation.”

Off-script on the stage of the event for “Yes” to the referendum on March 22nd and 23rd organized by Fratelli d’Italia at the Parenti theater in Milan, where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had just arrived for her speech. While the premier was greeting and thanking the people in the theater, a man climbed onto the stage and approached her, introducing himself: “Musumeci, Orazio Musmeci.” She, visibly surprised, responded to his greeting and thanked him, but he, not yet satisfied, added: “I await the resignation of Mattarella.” He then stepped off the stage and walked away. At that point, the premier looked around searching for perhaps an explanation, but no one intervened, and so, with an expression between question and astonishment, she opened her arms, adjusted her hair, and began her speech. The man was identified by the Digos (General Directorate for Internal Security) after the incident. A few hours earlier, he had announced in a video: “I am departing for Milan for a face-to-face meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Meloni, it is the first time I meet her and I will give her this surprise.”

Let's Make Them Pay

PSA: I not only block but report, on sight, any form of #Russian invasion apologism — even if it claims not to be following the #Putin party line. This includes any discourse that blames the war in #Ukraine on anyone but the invaders, or so much as hints that #Ukraine is wrong to fight back.

I've already had enough of that vile manipulative bullshit to last a lifetime, when I was on eX-Twitter. To my shame, I even followed accounts that spouted it. In my defense, I didn't know nearly as much then about the #Russian propaganda infrastructure as I do now. I now wonder how many of those "anti-imperialist" anti-Ukraine accounts on the birdsite were Russian bots/trolls. But even if sincere, rationalization of a brutal invasion by a ruthless #dictatorship is disgusting behavior. Even when the invader is not the #USA.

And more generally: I no longer have any patience at all with the kind of "anti-imperialism" that is a euphemism for blaming essentially 100% of the evil in the world on the #USA — even if that claim is not used specifically to rationalize the #Russian invasion of #Ukraine. It isn't 1947 anymore; as #Trump is finding out, our superpower status no longer includes the kind of total world dominance we once had. Michael #Parenti and others like him are SO fighting the last war. The #USA still has plenty of crimes to answer for, but that doesn't serve as the basis for any grand unified theory of world events.
