@frobozz

#ZFS is nice. I've had it, with full root-on-ZFS, since PC-BSD. It took me several years to actually realize how nice it was.

If you want something more arcane than #FreeBSD to play with, take a look at #Illumos, in particular its derivatives #OpenSolaris, #OmniOS, #SmartOS, and @ptribble 's #Tribblix.

Illumos has original Joy+Horton #vi (not one of the clones), the SMF, zones, ZFS, and a fair number of System 5isms not in the BSD world (e.g. sar, which @rl_dane was talking about the other day).

Prices for dedicated servers and VPS instances are raising more and more! Guess what…

#BoxyBSD still provides free VMs to people who want to learn #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD or even #Illumos / #opensolaris - all with full #ipv6 support - of course! #LearnBSD & #RUNBSD

Is there a good man page for this?
I found another ipf.conf buried in the nwam folder
i suspect that ipnat.conf goes there too

Using NWAM to configure network interfaces - OpenIndiana - OpenIndiana Wiki

@vermaden When I started my #Linux journey (in a predominantly #Windows shop) it was the tail end of #UNIX systems. My brief experience with Solaris 10 began with a #SPARCstation 20 in 2006ish and a handful of Sun Fire V880 and E4xxx servers in 2015. I am aware those machines were ancient by the time I used them

Solaris is the one #tech I genuinely feel like I missed out on. Not Oracle but Sun.

I checked out #OpenSolaris and its descendants over the years. I liked it but the one thing that really held me back from migrating to it (on the desktop) was the small package set. Unfortunately.

nwadm on wan interface only?
or should I disable nwamd all together and use ipadm dhcp?
I am still on my router firewall project 🤭🤭
Reason i ask is because i don't have a friggin clue since i went in head first trying to build a fw / router with Tribblix
And got wierd results when my rj45 was connected to incoming internet

How to install SmartOS on a datacenter machine

This blogpost documents how to install SmartOS in a datacenter machine, with no remote KVM neither physical access. SmartOS used to need a CD, DVD or USB pendrive to boot the Hypervisor (saving hacks

@BRicker I don't think it's really diverged much. #SunMicrosystems begat #OpenSolaris. Then Oracle unbegat it and the community begat #IllumOS by forking the last free release. There are then a bunch of distributions like #OmniOS and #Tribblix.

So .... as a late to the party observer, I'm guessing the poverty response to AArch64 by Illumos based OS'es is a signature of their pending extinction, with any number of BSD types as their ultimate supplanters?

Other indicators like the ceding of DTrace authority rights to Oracle's vultures, heralded by dtrace.org's empty threat to manifest a Linux port source, kinda implies the opensolaris train has done it's boiler, in the yard, with no Joyent rescue shunt evident.

A lot of smoke and steam, yet no tractive outcome.

Would love to be proven wrong, but evidence is very slim, that I can tell. Won't ever be waiting for a vaporware FOSS 0xide offering.

Truth be told, I'm kinda getting into #Solaris again, for the first time since the initial #OpenSolaris excitement.
