So .... as a late to the party observer, I'm guessing the poverty response to AArch64 by Illumos based OS'es is a signature of their pending extinction, with any number of BSD types as their ultimate supplanters?

Other indicators like the ceding of DTrace authority rights to Oracle's vultures, heralded by dtrace.org's empty threat to manifest a Linux port source, kinda implies the opensolaris train has done it's boiler, in the yard, with no Joyent rescue shunt evident.

A lot of smoke and steam, yet no tractive outcome.

Would love to be proven wrong, but evidence is very slim, that I can tell. Won't ever be waiting for a vaporware FOSS 0xide offering.

Well I went as far as dding an #OmniOS iso to my flash drive before I came to my senses. What the hell do I know about #Illumos based operating systems?

So I'm going to try to see if I can get Void to acknowledge my wireless card. If so, I'm going to use it for a while. Otherwise, I'll probably fall back to Alpine.

I’m Just the Barista

The spirit of the BSD Cafe and illumos Cafe is to try to create a serene, open, friendly, positive, and welcoming environment for all who want to be a part of it.
I am just the Barista.
I can't solve the world's problems, but I can try to keep the counter clean, keep the machines running, serve a good BSD coffee, and ensure that, at least here, friends can find a moment of peace and constructive sharing.

We need more bars and fewer shopping malls.

@grahamperrin

Shoot, @vab beat me to it, but you forgot #illumos .

@grahamperrin ...because of course other FOSS OSes don't exist, right? #illumos
Es gibt mehr als nur Linux, besucht uns auf dem #illumos Stand der #clt2026 und probiert gerne unser Demo System aus!

I had to write that FGA in part because *everyone* forgot about the SAF. (-:

@alanc

Service management, as I mentioned, began as the domain of the much older Service Access Facility, which comes from #Unix S5R4 in 1988.

The #Illumos manual page for the sacadm command (for one) is dated 1992, and the Illumos #ServiceAccessFacility dates back to the days of #Solaris 2.

The use of sacadm/pmadm/ttyadm/nlsadmin in Illumos et al. is the same now as it was when Æleen Frisch wrote about them for Solaris 2 in xyr book in 1995.

FGA: The Unix Service Access Facility

Frequently Given Answer explaining the Service Access Facility that Unices have.

@JdeBP @Radio_Azureus SMF was introduced in Solaris 10 in 2005 - while it still supports SVR4 init scripts from the 1980’s, they are deprecated.

#illumos also has https://illumos.org/man/8/ipadm from 2010-ish as a replacement for ifconfig, though ifconfig is also still supported.

@bms48 DTrace integration may encourage interest from the #illumos given that we have exchanged many key technologies.

In its current form, @bsdfund is a proposal-generating strategy that, with formal goals and milestones in place, passes around the hat. This has suited a handful of small projects well but somehow my fundraising efforts go primarily to @bsdcan and @openzfs

How “large”* a project do you estimate this to be?

* Not the optimal software metric.
