Yes. Really. Joy+Horton #vi had — well, has, since it's still there in #Illumos — three forms of open mode, in addition to visual mode, as explained in a long-forgotten comment in the source code.

I challenge the #retrocomputing world to find an ADM-3 (not an ADM-3A, which had cursor addressing) or another video terminal without cursor addressing, in the 21st century.
All of the retrocomputerists on YouTube appear to have 3As.
There's apparently an as yet unfilled niche for an aspiring YouTube retrocomputerista to show Joy+Horton vi in its 'one line' open mode on a video terminal that lacks cursor addressing.
You need a paper terminal for the complete experience, remember. (-:
#ZFS is nice. I've had it, with full root-on-ZFS, since PC-BSD. It took me several years to actually realize how nice it was.
If you want something more arcane than #FreeBSD to play with, take a look at #Illumos, in particular its derivatives #OpenSolaris, #OmniOS, #SmartOS, and @ptribble 's #Tribblix.
Illumos has original Joy+Horton #vi (not one of the clones), the SMF, zones, ZFS, and a fair number of System 5isms not in the BSD world (e.g. sar, which @rl_dane was talking about the other day).

Is there a good man page for this?
I found another ipf.conf buried in the nwam folder
i suspect that ipnat.conf goes there too
