Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, 6/15/24.

The non-profit Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse has done an amazing job restoring this lighthouse. They have paid very close attention to details, and whenever possible have matched the lighthouse’s original characteristics — even painting the interior rooms their original colors. We were able to climb up into the lantern room and crawl out to the gallery. The view is incredible (it helped that was a really beautiful day today). From the lighthouse you can see the Pomham Beacon, which is a cone-shaped daymark that was built around 1828. There is also a nice view of the Providence skyline.

I highly, highly recommend this tour! They typically do two tours each week throughout the summer months, and the cost is very reasonable. You can book at: https://pomhamrockslighthouse.org/tours/.

If you’re lucky, Gary and Judianne Point will be your docents!

Warwick Lighthouse (aka Warwick Neck Lighthouse), 7/22/23. The current tower was built in 1932, replacing the original tower built in 1826. Warwick Lighthouse is among ten others nationally that the U.S. Government designated for disposal and is offering to transfer to non-profits or municipalities. For now, it remains a Coast Guard installation, though unused, except for the light, which will remain an active aid to navigation.

Nayatt Point Lighthouse, 11/25/23. This is one of those lighthouses that they say is best seen by water — and that’s probably correct. The house and light are privately owned, though from the street you can get a fine view that includes the Conimicut Lighthouse in the background. There is public access to the water one street over and you can get a good glimpse from there too. The keeper’s house, built in 1828, is the oldest keeper’s house in Rhode Island. The current tower is not the original tower (which had a flawed design and was poorly built), but was built in 1858 to replace the original. The Nayatt Point Lighthouse was deactivated in 1868 when the Conimicut Lighthouse was lit.
