@JapanProf

I beg to differ. The concept of "rights" is *always* going to be halfway because rights are decided on and granted by some authority and can always be taken away or selectively applied by that same authority. (To be clear, I am not using "authority" here in the sense of an expert, but in the sense of concentrated power, whether in a single person or a power structure, whether that power was taken or supposedly "granted".)

It doesn't matter if we posit some other higher authority to moderate the first one, that just adds extra steps to the process but does not change the dynamics of it at all.

To my mind the only solution is to recognize and embrace the already existing reality of freedom and consequences, and to reject the model of rights and obligations under authority, which is the system that resulted in #Gaza.

*All* states must be dismantled.

You are correctly tugging at multiple threads.

1. #Secular #oneState or #noStateSolution is a fantasy. This is informed by our collective experience in the partition of #BritishIndia, which had many #uncannySimilarities with #BritishPalestine, least of which is that BOTH were offered #TwoStateSolution in 1947.

Mortal enemies #India & #Pakistan settled — Neither was perfectly happy, but it was good enough.

There was still violence, but neither tried to eliminate other

#NoStateSolution is an unattainable ideal in the modern world.

Look at #India and #Pakistan#mortalEnemies — who largely accepted a #TwoStateSolution in the 1947 partition of #British India.

There were large scale displacements among #Hindus and #Muslims — More than 15 million.

There were displacements elsewhere in the world too.

Why couldn't or wouldn't #Palestinians accept a similar #UN resolution for #Palestine in 1947?

@Yehuda "I want freedom for the Palestinian people under a government that cares about them in Gaza & West Bank." If only people in governments cared about the people they rule over and resulted in anything resembling freedom.

Tl;dr nation states, in their present form, and nationalism are big problems and make the conflict between Palestinians and the Israeli state intractable.

Now, the more interesting question for me is exploring Israeli claims of indigeneity to the land they occupy. It's true that a bare majority of Jews living in Israel are Mizrahi and have lived in and around the land occupied by the modern state basically forever. My understanding is that they were not really the most hardcore zionists pushing for the creation of an explicitly Jewish state, though.

Those zionists who worked so hard to establish the new theocratic state were largely Ashkenazi, who have mostly made their home in Europe for the past thousand plus years (and also make up a significant part of the diaspora, my own ancestors). Through their efforts to establish the state of Israel in 1948, commit the Nakba, make war with the surrounding nations, and form a new and largely invented national identity, most of the so-called Arab nations kicked their Mizrahi populations out in the 1950s. Most of those people went to Israel, resulting in the demographics there today.

It's a story of continual displacement and dispossession of both Jews and Arabs by both Jews and Arabs for the past 75ish years (that said, it has been disproportionate). It's the result of nationalistic projects along ethnic and religious lines in the region and a fast-forwarded and bloody sorting of people along those lines similar to that seen in Europe (most recently, in the genocidal violence in Bosnia as Yugoslavia disintegrated but plenty of other examples stretching back a couple of centuries to the origination of the idea that each ethnic/religious group ought to have it's own nation state and territory).

All this is to say: #NoStateSolution please.

I support freedom, autonomy and self-determination for Palestinian people.

I am convinced that the only realistic path to achieving this is the #NoStateSolution

Coming from a #system that has developed further and further into a multi-party #regime, and seeing what’s happening in yours, I really doubt that the sheer number of political #parties is the point here.
Rather it is, whether #people are and feel effectively represented, and the way fundamental #dissent is handled in a particular political #culture; a dozen or more parties, even if somehow part of the #parliament, doesn’t automatically make for a non “bi-polar” #society. On top of that, even a multi-polar socio-political landscape can lead to #immobility and eventual chaos; just watch the “ #news “. There needs to be a solid and common ground for all, and fair treatment for those who cannot claim a #majority or at least a big #minority.

#Shabbat shalōm/shavūa tov lefanēnu! 😬

Btw. and so we’re clear: one (or simply no) #state and no #inequality whatsoever for all of #Palestine! #OneStateSolution #NoStateSolution
@serge ooh, we actually agree on that! #noStateSolution
