Needed to scan some stuff this morning, so I pulled out the Canon printer/scanner I got for free with a laptop in 2008. Of course no drivers exist for modern operating systems, so it’s a perfectly functional piece of hardware but it’s useless. I hate planned obsolescence.

**Proposed Neologism: "FAISCISM" (fAIscism). The instantiation of fascist regimes through purported or actual "A.I." systems that: replace democratic participation with civic surveillance; undermine or eradicate information literacy and critical inquiry; heighten bias and expand differential treatment under the law; reorient the national political economy around state infrastructures controlled by and enriching oligarchs under the banner of "novelty", "technology" or "progress."

Pass it on.

This is maybe getting in the weeds, but I would expect using a canvas filled with `rgb(128 0 128 / 1)` as a displacement map (on the red and blue channels) to have 0 displacement in either direction, but it doesn’t.

Does Chromium have different implementations of sRGB for SVG and canvas, and they’re not calibrated to each other or something? I set `color-interpolation-filters="sRGB"` on my filter.

Introducing: Webbed Sites

A video from Webbed Briefs

A new long COVID study of over 1,000 children—472 under age 2 and 539 aged 3–5—found that 41% of toddlers and 45% of preschoolers who had COVID had at least one lasting symptom. It’s the first study of its kind in this age range.

Do you use data visualizations 📊 or add annotations to them? My collaborators and I are doing a study on how people use visualizations in their work — we'd love to interview you!

Annotation Interview Study

We are researchers at University of Utah, Harvard Medical School, and University of Oklahoma, seeking visualization professionals/practitioners to share insights on their annotation practices. The goal of our research is to identify best practices and challenges to advance annotation strategies and tools for the visualization community.

The only one with text-to-speech in the mobile app so it can read articles to me is Instapaper. Am I missing anything?
