Crappy weather today, so no tea photoshoot. (This is good. I'm running low on different teas to show off, so this gives me some more time to get new tea.) Instead today I'm showing off a shelfie of some of my favourite books.

These are collections of folk tales from Chinese minorities (plus one book, and not the thickest!, of a very ancient Han epic poem) translated to vernacular Chinese and English. Published by Wuhan University Press they are some of the best glimpses into cultures most people have never even heard of ever put to paper.

I typically only share Israel news if it has significant implications for the diaspora. This does. Also DellaPergola is a brilliant demographer and does super cool stuff.

"An analysis released this week predicts that, within the next 10 years, #Israel could become the home for a majority of the world’s #Jews, a change which, according to the new report, will “redefine the meaning of #Jewishpeoplehood.”

On Wednesday, the Institute for Jewish #Policy #Research (#JPR) published “The #Jewish People in 2126: #Demography, Identity, and the Future of a Global #Minority,” a 22-page paper by #SergioDellaPergola, a professor emeritus and former chairman of #HebrewUniversity’s Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary #Jewry who now serves as the #London-based #thinktank’s president for its #European #JewishDemography Unit."

A quotation from Adlai Stevenson

My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.

Back in 1982, when #ChiefJustice John Roberts was a 26-year-old #Reagan staffer, he wrote that #minority voting protections were “the most intrusive interference imaginable by federal courts into state and local processes.”

By rescinding the #VotingRights Act of 1965 this past week, he and "conservative" pals Alioto, Gorsuch etc all just completed the #election rights stifling life's work that the young #RWNJ radicals dreamed about over 40 years ago...

Supreme Court's Callais Decision Sets Off Redistricting Wars

Now racist redistricting will destroy our democracy, unless Democrats move decisively to counter it.

Reminder: You don't get to claim the title of "ally". It's something bestowed (or not) by the people you are *trying to* ally with.

Ally is a verb, not a noun. It's something you *do*, and have to keep repeating, for it to count. And only the people you're trying to help get to decide whether you succeeded.

let me see. The #NFL is what percent #minority? What percentage of their fans are minorities? if I was the league, I'd move teams OUT of Florida.

Florida takes its anti-DEI fight to the NFL

A civil rights lawsuit, as the state is threatening, would mount an unprecedented challenge for the nation’s most popular sports league.

A quotation from Bertrand Russell

There are some among philosophers and statesmen who think that the State can have an excellence of its own, and not merely as a means to the welfare of the citizens. I cannot see any reason to agree with this view. “The State” is an abstraction; it does not feel pleasure or pain, it has no hopes or fears, and what we think of as its purposes are really the purposes of individuals who direct it. When we think concretely, not abstractly, we find, in place of “the State,” certain people who have more power than falls to the share of most men. And so glorification of “the State” turns out to be, in fact, glorification of a governing minority. No democrat can tolerate such a fundamentally unjust theory.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
