#NativeAmericaCalling: Language teachers celebrate success on #IndigenousPeoplesDay

Monday, October 13, 2025

"After an intensive two-year adult immersion program, the number of fluent #SpokaneSalish language speakers nearly doubled.

"The success represents the work of the #SpokaneLanguageHouse, a non-profit that is funded and supported by the #Spokane Tribe in #WashingtonState. Now, some of the immersion program graduates will be hired on as full-time language teaching staff as the tribe expands its language revitalization efforts.

"Meanwhile, the #YuchiTribe in #Oklahoma has established the #YuchiLanguageProject. As part of the work, the tribe developed a unique partnership with an #AustralianAboriginal nation to exchange ideas for revitalizing both of their endangered languages.

"Tune into Native America Calling to hear about these two recent Native language success stories.

"Also, hear about a five-part talk show, '#RematriatedVoices', centered on #Haudenosaunee culture and principles. The first episode airs on Indigenous Peoples Day on New York #PBS affiliate #WCNY.

#NativeAmericaCalling: Native Playlist with #KenPomeroy and #SamanthaCrain

Friday, October 3, 2025

"Two #NativeAmerican women from Oklahoma are carving distinct and inviting musical paths through the music world.

"Samantha Crain is out with her seventh album. 'Gumshoe' offers the latest installment in the veteran #Choctaw singer-songwriter’s musical evolution. The cover artwork — a photo of her own beadwork — is a clue to the roots she draws on for strength and inspiration.

"And Ken Pomeroy is out with her debut album. 'Cruel Joke' invokes a simmering depth of feeling that transcends her young age. She is a natural storyteller from the #CherokeeNation with a lot to say.

"Both of these creative artists are added to the Native Playlist at Native America Calling."

#NativeAmericaCalling: Protecting #SacredSites in urban areas

Tuesday, October 7, 2025

"Protecting sacred sites in urban areas
Sacred sites sometimes get lost in urban settings as cities prioritize the needs of non-Native residents and commercial interests over the historical and spiritual value for Native Americans.

"But tribes and Native organizations are having some success connecting with city officials to see that sacred spaces are protected and accessible. After years of restoration work, what were known as the #IndianMounds in #SaintPaulMN, have a whole new look, a new #Dakota name — #Wicaḣapi — and an educational #CulturalCenter.

"Over in St. Louis, Missouri, the city just solidified a transfer of property that signifies its first-ever recognition of #TribalSovereignty. The sacred #SugarloafMound is being returned to the care of the #OsageNation, whose people were removed from the land.

"Tune into Native America Calling to talk about the difficult work to recognize and preserve sacred places in population centers."

#NativeAmericaCalling: What the #Texas #FlashFloods teach us about #EmergencyPreparedness

Monday, July 14, 2025

"Earlier this year, after numerous warnings by inspectors, a levee in Oregon gave way, damaging more than 950 homes, including those of the #BurnsPaiute Tribe. And on the #NavajoNation, notification was key to helping hundreds of residents evacuate as the #OakRidgeFire consumed more than 11,000 acres.

"Tune into Native America Calling to hear about those and emergency plans by some other tribes aimed at keeping threats from becoming human tragedies."

#NativeAmericaCalling: Residents brace for #Medicaid and #FoodAssistance cuts

Tuesday, July 8, 2025

"The Congressional Budget Office estimates the spending bill just signed by President Donald Trump will increase the number of people without #HealthInsurance by 16 million over the next ten years.

"The $1.1 trillion cuts to Medicaid will also affect #NativeAmericans who rely on it to pay for health care through the #IndianHealthService and threatens #RuralHospitals with a high rate of Medicaid-dependent patients. The new spending plan also substantially reduces the number of people who will collect food assistance through the federal government.

"Tune in to get insights on what these numbers mean for Native Americans who disproportionately rely on these two federal government programs.

"Also, find out about the significance of the new Indigenous head of #Mexico’s #SupremeCourt. #HugoAguilarOrtiz (#Mixtec) took office on June 1 following judicial elections in Mexico."

#NativeAmericaCalling: A new wave of resistance against #Trans #Native relatives

Wednesday, March 5, 2025

"Trans #NativeAmericans face a new wave of #resistance

"Iowa is testing new legal limits as the first state to remove gender identity as a protected class in the state’s civil rights code.

"The Trump administration is also removing transgender service personnel from the military. And the State Department is using existing law against #fraud to bar foreign #TransgenderAthletes from entering the country, something critics worry could be used to ban any trans traveler.

"After years of progress, Native American trans residents are facing a major rollback of favorable laws and policies. Tune in to hear about the current public climate and what might be in store for the future."

Friday, November 8, 2024 — Art from hardship » Native America Calling

Native Americans have a long and rich tradition of producing artwork from behind bars. In the past, it was both a means of artistic expression and a way to document and communicate important events. Modern inmate artwork is also a vehicle for creative expression. It is also a valuable tool for personal growth and rehabilitation. We’ll hear about artwork’s healing and redemptive significance for incarcerated Native Americans. #NativeAmericaCalling: Remembering the 1974 #Navajo border town murders

Friday, April 19, 2024

"The torture and gruesome murders of three Navajo men by white high school students touched off a series of racially-fueled conflicts in #FarmingtonNewMexico, on the border with the Navajo Nation.

"The murders in April 1974 became known as the #ChokecherryMassacre. One protest organizer at the time called Farmington 'the #SelmaAlabama of the Southwest,' referring to the simmering racial tensions.

"Demands by Navajos and other #NativeActivists since then have improved relations in the border town and surrounding areas somewhat.

"But many residents and observers say the sources of the problems remain just below the surface.

"Join Native America Calling to recount this little-known period of #FourCorners history and discuss what community relationships are like 50 years later.
