Some of the most sacred places for American Indian nations are located in national parks, but access to their holy ground continues to be contentious. Though the National Park Service has gradually become more responsive and cooperative, full recognition of Indigenous sacred places is still a long way off.

Circles of a Future Politician

Eli Weasel and four friends from the Tankosin Indian Reservation built one of USA's first local TDGs.

In the next three years, this TDG did not go far. No one else was interested.

But then came the catalyst. These Native American youth are vaulted into community prominence.

"Circles" is the third TDG novel.

National Park Origins—Part 2: Shrines to a Manifested Destiny

National parks in the U.S. are often seen as places of natural beauty, but their origins are tied to Manifest Destiny—the belief that Americans were destined to settle and civilize the continent. National parks became symbols of national progress, reinforced by art depicting western expansion. While they offer refuge and inspiration, their history is also marked by conquest and exclusion of Native Americans, displacing them from sacred lands.

Trump administration makes major cuts to Native American boarding school research projects

At least $1.6 million in federal funds for projects meant to capture and digitize stories of the systemic abuse of generations of Indigenous children in boarding schools at the hands of the U.S. government have been slashed due to federal funding cuts under President Donald Trump’s administration. The cuts are just a fraction of the grants canceled by the National Endowment for the Humanities in recent weeks as part of the Republican administration’s deep cost-cutting effort across the federal government. But coming on the heels of a major federal boarding school investigation by the previous administration and an apology by then-President Joe Biden, they illustrate a seismic shift.

Trump’s expulsions are jaw-droppingly cruel. But they’re part of an American tradition

Since colonial times, self-designated ‘communities’ have used expulsions to address supposed threats. It helps to explain how easy it has been for Trump to win support

Trump reaffirms that he's 'all for' deporting naturalized US citizens who commit violent crimes

Asked if he’s open to deporting naturalized US citizens to El Salvador, Trump says yes, “if they’re criminals”.

That includes them, they’re as bad as anybody. I’m all for it.

RFK Jr. wants to target chronic disease in US tribes, but key program was cut

A key program using traditional medicine and foods to tackle chronic disease in Native American and Alaska Native communities has been gutted in the federal health layoffs. Tribal leaders say the move earlier this month conflicts with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s stated priority of preventing chronic disease in their communities. With little information, tribes wonder if staff cuts in the Healthy Tribes program are part of the Trump administration’s push to end diversity, equity and inclusion. Grantees say it's not clear what is left of the 11-year-old program or whom they can ask for help. Tribal leaders and health officials say the cuts amount to another violation of the government’s legal obligation to tribes.
