RE: https://solarbird.net/blog/2026/05/21/lets-talk-being-able-to-talk-when-internet-and-cell-phone-service-both-go-down/

In these pleasant (relatively) days of late spring, it's probably a good idea to follow the EFF's advice and figure out how to set up emergency communications for when things go very wrong, and there's no internet, and no cell phone service.

I've done a lot of thinking about this the last year or so, and actually set up, tested, and used three different approaches, and here I share that with you:

An emergency contact list gives caregivers peace of mind during stressful moments when quick decisions matter most. Having important numbers, medical details, and support contacts organized in one place can help families respond faster, communicate clearly, and protect loved ones during emergencies.

Realized the instant mashed potatoes in our earthquake kit are expiring, so I ate some for breakfast. Everyone always says, "only prep with what you eat", but we don't really eat a lot of canned or dried food and we both have a ton of allergies.

Instant mash seems like something I'd want to eat if we had an earthquake or bad storm in the middle of winter and they literally take about a minute to make. Fairly dense in calories too.

They aren't nearly as bad as I remembered them, so when we need to use them up I will maybe use them to top a cottage pie. I also tested them out for farls and they make a really decent one. One of the smaller packages should make about 12 farls.

Glad they aren't going to waste.
