#Lesbian federal worker pleads for answers about wife trapped in #immigration #detention limbo

#GraziChiosque and #XiomaraSuarez are stuck between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

by Christopher Wiggins, Dec 16, 2025

Excerpt: "Chiosque, 29, lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and works at the Social Security Administration, where she’s been for going on four years. Her wife, Xiomara Suarez, 28, is a Peruvian national in the country legally, who is currently detained at the Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement Processing Center in Southern California. The two women married in February [2025] and filed in May to adjust Suarez’s immigration status, a process that U.S. immigration law explicitly provides for spouses of U.S. citizens.

" 'She had an ICE appointment, like a regular check-in in September,' Chiosque said. 'And that’s when she got detained.' "

WTF #Kansas!

An #AntiTrans #BathroomBill With a Cruel New Twist

A new Kansas law lets those “aggrieved” by the presence of a trans person in a bathroom to file a civil suit for monetary damages.

Natasha Lennard
February 3 2026, 8:59 a.m.

"With masked paramilitary forces grabbing nonwhite people from the streets and shooting civilians with impunity, it can be difficult to keep focus on all the other ways Republicans are entrenching a #fascist status quo nationwide. For #trans people, however, the legislative and policy assaults, which have been escalating red states for nearly a decade, are only getting worse — and, as ever, drawing all too little concern from Democratic leaders.

"Just last week, the Kansas legislature passed some of the most far-reaching measures to push trans and #GenderNonconforming people out of public life to date. Bathroom bans that bar trans people from restrooms aligned with their gender identity have become grimly common; over 20 states have such a law on the books. But Kansas’s new anti-trans bathroom bill adds a dangerous twist: a #BountyHunter provision.

"The law would permit private citizens to sue and seek monetary reward based on claiming to encounter a trans person in the bathroom. That’s on top of some of the harshest punishments of any existing bathroom bans, such as criminal charges, steep fines and even jail time.

"As journalist and trans rights advocate Erin Reed first reported, the bill’s vague language means that its reach could extend beyond public buildings — the remit of most bathroom bans around the country.

" 'As written, it would not only be the first bathroom bounty law to target transgender people directly, but also the first to extend a bathroom ban into private spaces,' noted Reed, “effectively creating the nation’s first private bathroom ban if enacted by empowering bounty hunters to search for trans people in bathrooms.'

[...]

"Kansas Republicans rushed through the bathroom ban, skirting public comment by essentially sneaking the bill into another piece of legislation aimed at denying trans people correct government IDs. The ID legislation is in and of itself extreme: it would invalidate driver’s licenses, government IDs, and even birth certificates that don’t list a person’s sex as assigned at birth.

"The bill would require trans people to surrender their correctly identifying driver’s license or risk a misdemeanor offense for driving with a invalid license. Trans Kansans would thus have to choose between carrying identification with their assigned sex at birth — inviting potentially further harassment and violence in public — or forgoing aspects of public life entirely. It’s a policy in line with the Trump administration’s move to stop issuing accurate passports to trans Americans."

The #SAVEAct Could Keep Millions of #Transgender Americans From #Voting

Should this legislation pass, it would further discrimination against transgender people and could keep millions of voters out of the voting booth.

Caleb Smith, Gréta Bedekovics
Feb 28, 2025

"Legislation recently reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives could make registering to vote significantly more difficult for transgender Americans—threatening millions of voters’ right to engage in the democratic process. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require all Americans to prove their citizenship status, in person, when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. Voters would also need to provide these documents every time they updated their registration information. The vast majority of Americans would be forced to present either a passport or their birth certificate to their election official in order to register to vote—documents that, even if transgender people possess them, may not reflect the name they use."

#Mainers in kayaks protest Chief Justice #JohnRoberts near his island home

by Stephen Betts, Midcoast Villager
July 19, 2025

"#Kayakers who say they oppose the direction the U.S. Supreme Court has taken the country took to the water Saturday morning to protest near the seasonal home of Chief Justice John Roberts Jr.

"The flotilla launched its kayaks from the new public landing in Port Clyde and paddled a few hundred yards to Roberts’ home on Hupper Island.

"The chief justice and his wife Jane Roberts purchased the home in June 2006. He typically spends time at the seasonal home after the high court recesses for the summer. Their chief residence is in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Signs voicing opposition to the #SupremeCourt’s rulings were brought in the kayaks, and others lined the waterfront.

"Signs referred to rulings that they said harm the #LBTQ community, the overturning of campaign spending limits for #corporations in the #CitizensUnited case in 2010, the overturning of a woman’s right to #abortion in 2022, and more recent rulings that grant the president immunity from actions taken while president.

"Organizer Susan MacNeil-Densmore said earlier this week she is affiliated with the organization #AudacityCAT (#CreativeActionTogether) which has been active locally working to resist #authoritarianism, but said the event was not really part of any specific organization."

" 'They falsely stated that I, a U.S. citizen, have no constitutional rights at a point of entry, and officers became increasingly agitated as I continued to assert my rights regardless,' Chavarria wrote. He described the experience as 'nothing short of surreal and the definition of #PsychologicalTerror.'

"In an interview with Vermont CBS affiliate WCAX, Chavarria said #CBP agents attempted to access his school-issued computer, which contains sensitive student data. He refused to provide his passwords without consulting the district’s legal counsel. 'I continued to ask for a lawyer, at least to ask the district lawyer to give me the go-ahead to provide that information, and they continued to refuse,' he told the station.

"Chavarria said he was also asked about the sincerity of his marriage and whether he was truly a superintendent. He said he believes his #detention was politically motivated. 'I’ve been very vocal and a big advocate for the protection of vulnerable communities in the state of Vermont and the nation,' he told WCAX. 'I’m in a very critical and visible position, and I’m not surprised when things like this happen.' He warned that 'it’s going to get worse if people don’t mobilize quickly.' Chavarria, who was born in a Honduran refugee camp and grew up in Nicaragua, came to the U.S. as a student and became a citizen in 2018. He holds two master’s degrees, including one from Harvard University. He has led the Vermont school district since 2023."

#PrideMonth kicks off in #Maine with celebrations and resources for #LGBTQ+ community  🏳️‍🌈

by Aysia Reed, June 2nd 2025 at 5:59 AM

#PortlandME (WGME) -- "It's Pride Month and there are multiple celebrations kicking off across the state this June. It's also important to recognize resources available for the #LGBTQ+ community.

#EqualityMaine is an organization working to secure full equality for #LGBTQ+ people.

"They have plenty of resources for LGBTQ+ youth, including what #StudentRights are in #Maine to information about #QueerCamps for ages 13 - 17.

"Equality Maine also has resources for networking for older adults. That includes a virtual statewide social hour on June 11 and a LGBTQ+ lunch in Hallowell at their community center.

"The group says there has been a lot of concern about changes to transgender health care but ensures there are still strong legal protections in Maine for #transgender health care in the state.

"There are Pride celebrations taking place in Portland, #OgunquitME, Lewiston-Auburn, and more this month.

"The #PridePortland Parade and Festival will be held in Portland on June 21.

"It's Maine’s largest Pride parade. It kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Monument Square with more than 100 groups expecting to march.

"This year's theme is '#MaineTranscends.'

"A three-day Pride celebration will be held in Ogunquit. The weekend Pride celebration kicks off with a Pride Picnic at The Front Porch and a Kick-Off Party at the West Meadow Pub on Friday evening with live music and Pride themed cocktails.

"The main event is a Saturday flag raising in Veteran’s Park, followed by a 'Pride in the Park' event featuring food trucks, live entertainment and LGBTQ+ vendors promoting items, programs and services.

"Folks in Lewiston and Auburn kicked off Pride Month on Sunday with the Great Falls Pride march. The organizers of the event say it’s so valuable to recognize this month.

" 'Given politics and the state of the world right now there is a lot of rhetoric and a lot of strong feelings against our community right now, so I think it’s good to have a space to come together to celebrate and it’s wonderful to see allies together, people show up for us,' said Alex Pine, a #GreatFallsPride organizer.

" '#Queer, #TransPeople, come from all walks of life. We come from all creeds and colors, and it's good for us to come together and see that for each other,' said Beatrice Roseland, who attended the Great Falls Pride march."
