Nebraska: Hey, remember when I warned that the Big Ugly Bill's Medicaid cuts were gonna hit well BEFORE the midterms? Well, guess what...

As of June 2025, around 70,000 Nebraska residents were enrolled in Medicaid via the ACA's expansion of the program. Last summer, after Congressional Republicans passed their Big Ugly Bill, I warned people against assuming that the gutting of Medicaid wouldn't hit until after the 2026 midterms: Over at The New Republic, Greg Sargent has taken this thinking one step further, noting that by delaying so much of the ugliness of the new law until 2027 or beyond... Republicans know how unpopular all this will be. So they’ve structured the bill so the tax cuts land immediately, while many of the Medicaid cuts get going in 2027 and 2028. That’s meant to spare them in the midterms. But there’s a wrinkle here worth appreciating. Those policies will start hitting right when JD Vance’s bid to succeed Trump is getting underway. For Vance—perhaps the most prominent evangelist for Trumpism’s supposed promise for the working class—to have to defend all of that carnage while running for president could yet prove a form of poetic justice. Again, this is a fair statement, as far as it goes. However, while I'm not an expert on any of the non-healthcare provisions, when it comes to the sections related to healthcare policy, a whole lot of the ugly will actually hit well before the midterms.

Last year’s Big Ugly Bill made drastic cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs. At least 88 big corporations paid $0 in income tax last year — thanks to Republicans The One Big Ugly Bill Act will give the wealthiest 1% of Americans $117 billion in tax cuts this year, the bottom 95% will pay more. These findings show systemic deficiencies in the corporate tax code. Without reform, corporations will continue to pay much less than their fair share.

Propublica: “The Alarm Bell”: #Arizona’s Drop in #SNAP Participation Signals Potential Nationwide Impact of Trump Legislation

Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act imposes stricter food stamp work requirements and shifts a larger share of the costs to states. Arizona’s swift implementation has made it more difficult to apply and caused nearly half of recipients to lose benefits.

"More than 400,000 Arizonans have lost their SNAP benefits since July — the largest decline in the nation by a wide margin — as an underfunded state agency administered changes called for in President Donald Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

"The drop represents nearly 47% of the state’s participants in the program better known as food stamps and includes about 180,000 children, according to the Arizona Department of Economic Security, which administers the program.

"On Wednesday, the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities released data through February showing that the reduction in Arizona has far outstripped other states. After Arizona, the largest loss of participants was in Florida, where less than 16% of recipients lost benefits since July, according to the center’s analysis.

"Arizona officials attribute the plunging caseload to swift implementation of policy changes forced by the bill, including new work requirements.

"But interviews suggest that Arizona’s efforts to comply, combined with cuts to the agency that runs the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, have contributed to the decline — making it more difficult to apply and causing people who are eligible to be denied. The state’s drop has exceeded previous projections.

" 'Arizona is just the alarm bell,' said Joseph Palomino, executive director of the Arizona Center for Economic Progress, a nonpartisan advocacy organization. “This is likely going to happen in every state.' "

Unfortunately, via the #BigUglyBill and #TrumpRegime policy changes, that population is no longer eligible. Result: #ACA exchange enrollment of those who earn less than 100% FPL (just $15,650/yr if you're single) plummeted by 45%, w/over 240,000 losing coverage.

Remember last year's #BigUglyBill? Well this year it will start to devastate the #health clinics that serve low-income patients. But conveniently for #Republicans, the impact won't hit most states until after the elections.

Work requirement laws could cost nonprofit health centers billions

The short version: New York's "Essential Plan" for low-income residents provides nearly $0-cost comprehensive coverage for ~1.75 million New Yorkers who earn between 138 - 250% of the Federal Poverty Level. Due to the GOP's #BigUglyBill, around half the funding of the program has been eliminated.
