Discovery reveals key molecular event that boosts wheat's defense against devastating disease

A new study published in Science by a team of scientists across five continents led by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Associate Professor Brande Wulff reports a previously unknown molecular event that initiates the immune response to a major wheat disease. The findings provide strategies to engineer wheat that has stronger immunity against infection.

Discovery of wheat gene pair that combats powdery mildew could lead to more resistant varieties

A study has identified a wheat nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) gene pair, RXL and Pm5e, that confers resistance to the devastating wheat powdery mildew disease.

...We are witnessing a historical process – or, more accurately, the beginnings of one – that is likely to culminate in the downfall of Zionism. ...For once #Israel realizes the magnitude of the crisis, it will unleash ferocious and uninhibited force to try to contain it, as did the South African apartheid regime during its final days.

Melon's molecular armor: New insights into crop protection

Melon crops face significant threats from pests such as aphids and diseases including powdery mildew, which can lead to substantial economic losses and affect food security. Traditional pest management strategies often prove insufficient, necessitating a deeper understanding of the genetic basis of resistance in plants.

Researchers solve mystery of how minimalist plant immune molecules become activated

In a new study published in the journal Nature, researchers led by Jijie Chai at Westlake University, China, and Jane Parker and Paul Schulze-Lefert at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany, have demonstrated that an important class of immune proteins must condense into droplets in order to become activated and protect plants against infections.

Plant warfare: The crucial function of Nrc proteins in tomato defense mechanisms

In the fascinating world of plant biology, a study recently featured on the cover of The Plant Journal has been turning heads. The research delves into the intricate defense mechanisms of tomatoes against the notorious bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst). It's a classic tale of nature's arms race: As pathogens evolve to outsmart plant defenses, plants counter with more sophisticated immune responses.

We exhaustively annotated all intact and degraded NLRs within complete genomes, using long read RNAseq and pangenome-wide TE annotation. We use pangenome graphs to explore the diversity of NLRs across accessions, and to define regions containing NLRs in a principled way.

2/n

Our main finding is that many uncorrelated mutational processes create NLR diversity, and that there is no single metric that captures on its own the true extent of NLR structural and sequence variation. We also show that NLRs themselves are drivers of elevated pangenome complexity, rather than mere passengers on diverse regions.

This has been a huge effort over many years, lead by Luisa Teadale (not on masto), @coevolution, and myself, with major contributions from many in the Weigel Group, so we're very happy to be sharing it at last.
@kdm9 super cool work, congratulations!!!!
